He's got a nice set of weapons [Sengese scythe and Gris-gris], so I want to see his fighting style fleshed out some more when he puts to use those tools at his disposal in the midst of battle against an opponent like Mr. Twist.

I can't wait to read the 4th's issue! Should be pretty good. ^^

Justin and Patrick are building something good here, and I hope they keep challenging themselves. Also, hooray for my first post in valiant forums. It's a shame I didn't join sooner.

I beg to differ. It's like a full scale invasion. Soon we'll have to change the name of the site.

Anyone else wish that the new Valiant had some continuity with the original? For instance when Darque mentions 20 years it made me think back to him back then. Also when I saw Shadowman i had a glimmer of hope it was the original. I guess every adventure we had as kids are we supposed to pretend didn't happen, or just that this is a different Valiant universe?

No. It needs to be its own thing otherwise new fans would be alienated and Valiant would be trying to survive off of it's former readers, which would be a recipe for disaster.

+1

A Easter egg here and there for old fans is fine, and there are the Valiant: Masters collections. That's all that is needed

Hey I finally caught up! Re-read issues 1-3 over the weekend. I'm really digging this book. The art is just mind-blowingly fantastic but Reber's coloring REALLY sells the look of the book, especially in the deadside with the ghosts. Digging Jaunty and I liked his dialog. It cracked me up when Shadowman called him out on it though. Cool monkey and I like his top hat. Ha! :thumb: Loved the interaction with his dad and I thought he was drawn well as an "old Shadowman". Deadside looks really cool. It kind of reminded me of the Constantine movie a bit. Anyways, I think the pacing is fine, we are only on issue #3 afterall and I think it's really going to take off from here now that Jack has made his decision. Can't wait for issue #4!

Finally got my January books yesterday, so I can finally comment after having read all of this issue. Loved it all. The art, the coloring, the story and character development! Loved seeing Josiah and Jack interacting and Jack finally realizing that this guy in front of him was his dad! Not quite as touching as Big Torque meeting Little Torque in Harbinger, but cool.

Most of what I could have said has already been covered so I'm not going to parrot it again, but I think issue 3 is the best and most exciting issue so far. The art is great and the colouring especially is fantastic and has really started to form a strong new Deadside, and I'm just thankful that Shadowman (in my opinion) seems to be turning out to be the most lovingly created comic in Valiant's new run.

I'm thankful that it's become its own new story and hasn't tried to continue continuity from the previous series, as that would only serve to alienate new readers and frankly, all things need to reboot every now and then to prevent stagnation.

As for "seeing more of Shadowman" and "the story is a bit slow so far", it's coming across to me as the creators taking their time to really do a damn good job of establishing the setting and getting the story going, which I think is well worth doing. For me, the Shadowman setting has the potential to be so much more rich and atmospheric than some of the other stories on offer at the moment (Bloodshot and Harbinger for instance, which predominantly occur on Earth) that I'm glad they're taking the time to set it up well.

Of course, when they've done so, there'll be lots more from the Shadowman and less of Jack, and it'll be one Hell of a rollercoaster ride :D

After reading the first 3 issues back to back I'm convinced that this book is better suited for tpb, at least this first arc. I'll buy the digital copy tomorrow, because I really wanna see how this unfolds. 8-)

Deadside was just killer visuals! Great stuff!
