Moon Knight Returns in '06

Post by cptfishstick »

The news has been flying around the internet for a little while ago. According to a report on Newsarama.com, Joe Quesada has claimed that "a writer has been selected" and that a new Moon Knight series will appear in early 06.

No word on whether or not its a mini (like the last two solo appearances) or an ongoing (fingers crossed).

I just hope its good, and also hope that everyone is willing to try it out (whether or not you know about Moon Knight). Because if you guys like it (and buy it), then there is a better chance it will stay around.

YAY!

(sorry, just really excited)

If any of you guys are curious about Moon Knight, check out my site (in my sig)

Im definitly going to pick this book up when it comes out, The redesign seems "interesting" and I'm wondering what there going to do with his origin. I was never a big Moon Knight fan but I picked up some of the older runs to give it a shot, Moon Knight has always been a somewhat interesting character to me, being my cousin had them all. You never know who will be the next huge Marvel character....

There are probably a thousand differences, but I always saw Moon Knight as potentially Marvel's Batman.

If that is the case then a lot of poor decisions must have been made, because DC's character has done rather well over the years. Can't say the same for MK.

Looking forward tho' to seeing what they do this time around.

Maybe a sidekick called Sparrow? :)

Moon Knight had a sidekick before, who was the son of an archfoe that he killed. Then the sidekick got caught in an explosion, became a cyborg and wanted revenge on Moon Knight.

What's Moon Knight's powers? I have a couple of issues but can't seem to find his superhuman abilities? Is he a mutant?

I don't think Moon Knight has any powers, hence the comparisons to Batman. I certainly hope Marvel didn't revamp him to be a mutant!

Naw, that's only the Ultimate universe Moon Knight, where even *Tony Stark* is a freaking mutant.

Moon Knight is "suggested" to have enhanced strength in the moon light. After all, he was resurected by the egyptian god of the moon. Both these issues, however, have been confronted with a great deal of ambiguity because they were major plot points. Marc Spector (moon knight) was constantly fighting to understand what truley happened to him. The whole motivation behind moon knight is redemption. He doesnt fight for revenge or responsibility. No, he is fighting to save his soul. He spent years of his life killing people for money, that when he was faced with death...he realized the wrong of his ways. This adds a very compleing dynamic to his character because he is constantly torrmented by the demons of his past.

The original Moon Knight series (Moon Knight [v.1])pitted Moon Knight against both illusive macabre villans, and down to earth evil people in urban New York. Doug Moench created Moon Knight in an attempt to explain what it would be like for a "real" person to try to be a super hero, and what kind of psycological problems that would entail." For the most part he didn't have super powers, and neither did his villans. One of my favorite villans was Black Spectre who was a disgruntled Vietnam vet who used violence to gain financial support and get political office. Only Moon Knight was aware that the publicly loved Mayor and the evil Spectre were the same person. One of the most interesting parts of the original moon knight series was that Marc Spector took up many identities. He had Stephen grant, the wealthy art dealer who handled ancient egyptian artifacts. He used his welath gained in his mercenary days to gain access to the wealthy parts of society. Another identity was Jake Lockley, who was a grungy cab-driver who functioned primarily on the streets to get information on dealings in the underworlds. In one story arc of the original series, Spector suffered from this multiple personality disorder and lost his personal identity.

The most recent ongoing (Marc Spector: Moon Knight [v.3]) was overwhelmed by lots of writers that didn't understand what Moon Knight was all about. Don't get me wrong, some of the writers were really good. But since they didnt' understand Moon Knight, they wrote stories that wern't true to his original character. In the end he suffered some serious Batman-ising. He was given a company (spectorcorp), lots of high tech gadgets, a suit of armour instead of just a costume, etc. Some of the stories were still good...but lets just call issues #30-60 of Marc Spector Moon Knight VH2 style. Moon Knight was killed in issue #60. The most annoying part of this series was that they threw his multiple personalities into the wind. In this volume, he was Marc Spector, and Moon Knight ONLY.

Years later, MK creator Moench returned to do a 4 part mini on Moon Knight in which he resurected him. His resurection story did what most creators probobaly want to do when their creations are triffled with. Moench's story "ressurection war" approached the last run with that same sence of confusion that he did with MK's origin. Technically he said it might not have actually happened. The writers way of saying it was bull crap. He imediatley disolved spectorcorp which was unneccessary, and too Batmany. He also brought back the multiple identities that most MK fans missed dearly. This 4 part mini was excelent...however people who didn't read the original 80's run will not like it sence it is heavily dependant upon knowledge of it. a few years later he did another 4 part mini with Mark Texiera which is not dependant upon earlier knowledge, and is in fact a good old MK story.

on an aditional note:

NEWSARAMA had the latest Cup O Joe in which Quesada (jq) stated

JQ: Well, fans heard us talk a lot about Moon Knight at the convention and how we actually have four issues in from a new to comics writer which is just amazing stuff, hardcore Moon Knight fans will not be disappointed!

The scripts have circulated through Marvel like wildfire and every editor is chomping at the bit to work with this new writer based upon these scripts. Not since Allan Heinberg have I seen someone knock it out of the park on their first attempt like this.

So, while it’s too early to announce this writer’s name just yet, we have signed a superstar top ten artist to the project (they fell in love with the script), but you’re going to have to wait on that as well.

Why am I teasing you with this, well, it’s because I just want to let Moon Knight fans know that they have great reason to cheer up and look forward to the future. Moon Knight’s going to be a big time player in the Marvel Universe.

Joe keeps hinting that he'll be a big time player but doesn't really clarify what that means. Will he be Onslaught big (all powerful), Spidey big (not really in the same league as a thunder god yet you can't have a team-up story without him) or just Avengers new member big (some random good guy who's around for 12 issues or so and dies or leaves or cries about something and then dies or leaves.. :P )

would you say Moon Knights costume is black now? unless thats just the way they shadowed it....I think a black costume would do him a little more justice anyway

speedracex,
Moon Knight's costime has technically been black since the first Moon knight Series in 1980. But because of the overwhelming # of creators on the series, its morphed into being white. He is the "Jet and Silver Avenger" implying Jet Black and Silver.

His first appearance was in Werewolf by Night 32 (1975), in which he had a silver costume (since silver is a weakness of werewolves) But he also had a different origin then as well.

So when Moon Knight got his own series in 1980, not only his origin changed, but his costume as well. The artist of the first series, Bill Sienkiewicz, changed the costume to better fit the character and mood of his debut series and origin. It was no longer silver, but black and it was the light that sometimes made it shine a silvery white at times. His costume is much like the moon, stark contrasts between white and black. His cloak/cape is in fact white. But his costume is very, very black. That wasn't the only thing that changed on the costume.

Bill Sienkiewicz, the inital artist of the very first Moon Knight Series, had this to say in a 1981 interview: "It's a black costume, but if the light hits it just right, it appears white. One of the reasons I decided it was black was that I wanted to imbue the whole thing with a sence of dread to make this guy almost ethereal. Seeing him come up out of the fog is sort of like the melting of the wicked witch of the west in reverse. I picture him as this pool of blackness with a white crescent on his chest, surrounded by a white, billowing cape and a hood with these eyes just peering out at you. But when you look back, all you see is the darkness." (Amazing Heroes, November 1981)

Don Perlins original Moon knight costume design, heavily white, with a funny colar. It also had Spiked Gauntlets, and a cape that Connected to the wrists and was only waist length.

Bill Sienkiewicz's MK has a full crescent shaped cape. A black costume, no colar, and much more dynamic flair.

Since, it has always been confused that Moon Knights costume Might be white, or black. Certain artists depicted it as black, such as Mark Texiera in the 98 Mini series, as well as the artist of the new Marvel Team Up comic strip. The New Ultimate Moon Knight seems to take some heavy color/lighting influences from Sienkiewicz's original work on the character.

However, its really quite understandable why its pretty much accepted to be a white costume. Even many of Bill's MK pics looked predominantly white. Most artists to depict the crescent crusader, particularly those who didn't shade their images, made him completley white.

Most peoples experience with Moon knight was NOT from the original early 80's volume, so All they know is a White Moon Knight. Which is fine. I however, think his most powerfull visual depictions, are those done to where the costume is black with white highlights.

And since everyone draws parralells to batman, i'll do it myself. Whether or not Moon Knights costume is White, or Black with strong White highlights is like asking if Batmans cape is Dark Blue or Black. Ive seen it both ways, and both are cool! :D

Not an easy answer eh?

To make it simple: Its Generally accepted to be White, though it was supposed to be black. :thumb:
