Valiant By Chance....twice!!
I was aware and became interested in comics in the 1970's as an uncle of mine was into US comics, which, at the time was even more unusual than it is now! So I had an awareness and enjoyed reading the odd comic from time to time during the late 70's early 80's. However, it wasn't until the 90's when I had my own money (but not much) that I became more seriously into buying comics. Like most other people I was strictly Marvel and DC, the usual stuff!
Can't quite remember how, but in the mid 90's I received a free copy of X-O #15 (pink logo I think?) with some other comics I'd ordered. I treated this non DC/Marvel comic with suspicion, but eventually got around to reading it because, after all, it was free! I liked what I read so I decided to buy more comics about this X-O fella to see if would hold my interest. This was slap bang in the middle of the comic boom so early copies of Valiant were expensive but I slowly built up issues and pieced together the story of X-O.
Then, as we now know, Valiant comics began reducing in value and many could be found in the 50p bargain bins, which was good when I was on a budget. I was able to complete my X-O collection and continued to buy even in the post BirthQuake era, although now looking back on those issues I've no idea why as they were often thin on story line? Maybe I was being optimistic in thinking maybe great things were just around the corner?
When Acclaim took over I again approached this with optimism and decided to buy all issues of X-O, Troublemakers, Magnus etc in the hope that the big names on board would turn in something interesting...again with hindsight there was a lot of mediocrity being put out even though I bought them all. When Acclaim comics folded I drifted away from comics...until July 2012!
Sitting at home with my Iphone and access to the internet, I don't know why, but I thought..I wonder has my copy of X-O #1 (VH1 not VH2
) increased in value in the past 12 or so years since I stopped buying comics? Quick Google search of X-O Manowar #1 and what do I see...Valiant is back from the dead and re-launching!!
Could I really get back into reading after all these years? Yes I could and here I am! Valiant only and currently buying all issues. I'm even enjoying Harbinger (my second fave after X-O) which is odd as I'd always struggled to get interested in mutant type stuff.
Recently started re-reading the old Valiant (VH1) again, surprised how bad a lot of it is (although some real moments of inspiration in the concepts). Enjoying being part of the comic reading community too, Valiant fans forum, OTV, twitter, podcasts etc makes the experience all the more interestring!

If I win an argument, it doesn't mean I'm right. It means I'm a better arguer.
In addition, I'm right.

Welcome back
Your dreams were
Your ticket out
Welcome back
To those same Valiant Comics
That you loved so much
Well, the names
Have all changed
Since you hung around
But those dreams
Have remained and
They've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead you
(Who'd have thought they'd lead you)
Back here where we need you
(Back here where we need you)
