My first Valiant Gold (circa 1993)

Post by Carson »

I was just browsing my VH1 comics and discovered my first Valiant gold book, Bloodshot #0.

What's special about this now readily available book is the two photos I stuffed into the bag with it.

I was 14 years old and a die-hard Valiant fan and promoter in '93. I converted all of my comic reading friends into Valiant fans, and some that didn't normally read comics.

My local comic shop told me if I created a display, they would hang it. So, I created this Bloodshot painting on sheet-rock. I cut three holes in the sheet-rock for the new or popular Valiant books of the month.

Phil (the LCS owner) was blown away and hung it front and center, high up on the wall were you would see it right when you walked in. It was awesome!

I sent Valiant pics and a letter and they sent me a Bloodshot #0 gold. A fitting reward :-)

Such a good memory.

Still gotta post mine sometime.

If I win an argument, it doesn't mean I'm right. It means I'm a better arguer.

In addition, I'm right.

Very cool indeed. All I did to get my gold book was write a letter to them complaining about the damn gold books.

Loved that shop! It was a really old house converted to a retail space. It had tons of sunlight and high cielings, which most comic shops are lacking (in my experience at least).

'twas a as day for Southern Pines NC when Phil's comics closed down!

Aw, that sucks. My childhood comic shop is still kickin', but I don't live in that city anymore. Luckily I have a pal who still goes there, and I see pix of it whenever Valiant throws a #walkinwednesday

I could see tons of sunlight being bad for comics out on display for too long, though... but I still like the look of your old lcs :thumb:

^ Yeah, you wouldn't want a Giant Sized X-Men #1 baking in the sunlight hanging on the wall, that's for sure!

Now that I think about it, I don't think Phil displayed old, valuable comics. But, those were never my thing anyway! Flipping through the quarter bins was more my thing :-)
