Reactions to Shadowman at LCSs?

Post by Elveen »

So I'm thinking Shadowman might be a BIG hit for Valiant and I was curious what the reaction is from local comic shops.

I stopped into a place by me yesterday (at about 6:00). They had 28 total covers on their shelf (they ordered more but took some of them to a bi-weekly con). This is what they had (I did buy a black out cover) when I left.

Only 3 of 28 total books left. Pretty good for the first 6 hours.

Any other reports?

Shop well stocked first thing in AM, then... lots of people picking it up. :thumb: 40+ sold day 1.

I mentioned this in another thread, my LCS either sold out by the time I got there (~5:00ish PM) or they didn't order any extras. I doubt they didn't order extras because I have seen shelf copies of other VEI titles and they always had plenty of #1's. In fact they seemed to be ordering more and more each month.

This isn't a big shop though (and most of its space is dedicated to gaming), so "sold out" probably means 5 or so copies.

I couldn't wait to pick it up from my pullbox at my regular LCS, Paradise, so I stopped by Meltdown Comics on the way to work this morning (Probably the 2nd biggest store in L.A.) and picked it up. There were probably 10 copies left (Only Zircher) but I have no idea how many they ordered overall. It's a really big store so I'm going to guess a lot.

Valiant seems to be picking up a little bit around here. Still not very big. I've helped create a couple of new fans though and I plan on doing MUCH more once the trades come out.

I was lucky enough to have this day off, so I was all over it.

The big shop @ 11:30 am- About 50 copies on the shelf, blackouts about 1:5, variants long gone and they had only been open for an hour. I snagged the 2 nicest blackouts (which were really nice).

My shop 12:00- 3 regular on the shelf. Picked up my regular copy which was in decent shape and my blackout variant which had a nice ding on the spine which I suspected would happen hence my stop at the big store to cherry pick on the way over. I pointed it out to my LCS guy and he went back to pull the only other one he had which was my old partner Dan's (the Hambringer guy, we're still good friends) his was worse, same ding and a nasty thumb wrinkle on the front. It looked like Andre the Giant just finished reading it  Interestingly enough my LCS guy asked me if I could get him an XO 2 and 6, I said "no problem by the way how come you never got a Shadowman Black, you need to get on Diamond about that." :hope:

Other shop #1 around 1:00- One really nice blackout on the shelf, bought it. I talked to the guy and said "sold out all ready?", he was sorry he didn't order more they went fast.

Other shop #2 around 3:30- I have bought VALIANT variants from this guy and had the Johnson variant held for me, I picked it up. He had 3 regular copies on the shelf and I asked him why no blackouts? He said he got them only for file customers who ordered them as it's supposed to be, I thought that was cool. He was also thinking he should have ordered more.

Other shop #3- 3 regular on the shelf, checked the shelves and found a XO 6 Brathwaithe cover for my LCS guy picked it up.

Other shop #4- Saw me walk in with my Shadowman shirt (I broke it out of this archives for this one day only) and said- "Sorry man, sold out". He too wish he ordered more. Scanned his shelves and found 2 XO 2s but they were kind of thrashed, pass.

After all this I figured this book was going to be a good one so I went back to the big shop and got another nice regular and blackout as well as a good XO 2 for my LCS guy.

Whew... what a day, I ended up with 2 regular, 4 blackouts and the Johnson variant.

Sorry for the long post but Elveen reports for us so I'm happy to do the same.

As an aside I was really *SQUEE* off with CBR (2/5) and Newsarama (5/10) reviews, what book were they reading??? It might not have been perfect but 2 out of 5....come on man

In the pre-release review, it was 5/10 in today's "best shots rapid reviews".

Check it out, it looks like they read CBR then wrote this-http://www.newsarama.com/comics/best-sh ... 21108.html

Like I said

There were no copies of the reg cover or the variant cover on the shelf, only the copies in my pull box. My LCS is small, I think that I am the only other guy at the shop that's into Valiant.

When I stopped by on Thursday they had 7.

The shop I went to ordered enough to get the 1:20 variant. By Thursday, all that was left was one copy of the regular on the shelf. The same cannot be said for the other VEI issues.

I didn't count copies, but my LCS had at least 50, since I pre-ordered the 1:20 & the 1:50. I arrived about 20 minutes after the store opened, and didn't see the other 1:20 on their variant display shelf... so there's at least one other guy into Shadowman in my area.

I just got one copy of each cover. There were still plenty on the shelf, but I'm curious to see what'll be left when I go back next wednesday.

Orbital comics in London had about five each of the regular and blackout left on the shelf this morning (I had them both and Johnson cover in my pullbox on Wednesday.)

Forbidden Planet had about the same, plus four Johnson covers on the shelf. They had a 1:50 on the wall on Wednesday but that looked to have gone today.

Any views on the kind of price the 1:50 might be getting over the next few months?

I picked up my books on Wednesday, and the guy at the shop told me I missed Dinesh and others from Valiant by about 10 minutes. I'm in L.A. and they were around for the Long Beach Comic Con. Some of them couldn't get back to New York because of the storm. So, they decided to visit some L.A. shops.

As a result of my good timing, I picked up an A&A Gold, X-O Gold, X-O 1 signed by Vendetti and Simons, and a Valiant Preview book (the first one) signed by Vendetti and Nord. All four books for 50 bucks.

Oh, and I picked up all four covers of Shadowman. Very good day.

I'll have to go back to the shop to see how Shadowman is selling.

Hard to say, but I grabbed a set of 4 off ebay for $49.99+shipping. I've been more picky on the variants, but that 1:50 cover is awesome, and I figure at that price (around 30-35 before shipping) I'm really doubt I'll get it cheaper - so I caved! :)
