How much have you spent on comics in your lifetime?
I thought this would be a fun poll.
I know it was mind boggling when I really thought about how much I have spent in my life on some ink on paper with staples and some cardboard and plastic to store them in...
How about you?

I'm just guessing here. More than I know, but less than I want.
Hey, look! I have a podcast!
And a Website!

If I win an argument, it doesn't mean I'm right. It means I'm a better arguer.
In addition, I'm right.

I definitely think the ice cream answer suits me well. That's about what I've spent since I started collecting. Ice cream adds up, just like comic books.

I voted "A nice used car in running condition."
I am sure I have spent more then 10k on comics (since I started collected in the 90's) but I am 99.9% sure I have spent less then 20k.

Re: How much have you spent on comics in your lifetime?
Well what is too much? Is too much, 5k, 50k, $100? And what about the books you've read once, twice, a number of times, then sold for break-even? Or gave to someone else? Or sold for a slight gain/loss...What about the books you never read, but flipped for a quick profit? What about the book in your collection you couldn't care less about if you took a loss on, or plan to sell down the road...ckb wrote:Too much?
I know, Aram, you're starting a poll to get an idea of how people approach this business, but asking the total amount of what someone spent on comics is like saying, how much entertainment did you get from watching television last year, I don't look at in in black/white.

Well given that comparison, you could apply your television question likewise monetarily, as people often spend $40-$90 per month on cable / satellite television but then they also usually have nothing physical to show for it, unless maybe they have a full tivo.GGSAE wrote:Well what is too much? Though I think a closer analogy might be vhs/dvd/blurays.
Anyways I don't think anything is usually too much for most people unless it;
A: Gets you into trouble. or
B: Makes you regret that you didn't spend it on something else.
or perhaps..
C: Kills you when the boxes topple over and crush you.

A falling longbox might knock me out, but it would take a lot more than that to crush me. I'm well-padded.Aram wrote:C: Kills you when the boxes topple over and crush you.(gives a concerned look in Greg's direction)

Well there could be a herd of razorbacks stampeding in your neighborhood that cause a seismic shift that triggers an earthquake.. that topples multiple rows of longboxes..greg wrote:A falling longbox might knock me out, but it would take a lot more than that to crush me. You know... just saying for your safety.. might want to send some of those boxes out here to me and BTE... we're prepared for earthquakes here...

I try to keep my boxes stacked to about 66 inches or less. I only have one stack that violates that rule.greg wrote:A falling longbox might knock me out, but it would take a lot more than that to crush me. Probably between 10k and 20k.
Depends if you include the Comic-Con trips and other ancillary stuff.

...I was a dumb kid collecting in the early to mid 90's.
so....a lot more than I wish I did.
and I still haven't got any takers on my early Quasar run....

Same here. I've been collecting for about 20 years and I can honestly say I've spent waaaaay more than my collection is worth.myron wrote:same here...couldn't even fathom a guess...no clueGGSAE wrote:No Idea.

I think I should have picked sports over comics...

Re: How much have you spent on comics in your lifetime?
I could actually tell you practically down to the dollar, although I haven't accounted for supplies. I've had a database of what I buy for at least 14 years now, and before that it was easy to account for because all of my books were basically bought for cover price as a kid, except for my Silver Iron Man books, which I kept the store tags on the bags up until I logged them into my database.
There are two components to how much I've spent:
A) I don't even want to post the # publicly
B) The common reader would think I'm nuts, but if you averaged out the costs over the life of my collection (basically... hmmm... 23ish years or so), the cost per year isn't all that outrageous.

If you took all of my comics books and laid them end to end…well, I'd ask you why the hell you're messing with my comic books.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.

Quite much especially with VEI relaunching. I'm still enjoying every bit of it. Part of the spending was becasue of my personal preference.
