...but could any Acclaim Valiant books be a part of the new VALIANT?

Warren has said the goal is up to 18 books by the end of year 3 (and possibly more beyond that). Given there are only a handful of original VALIANT titles that are almost certain to get the reboot/reimagination (the current 5 plus Rai, EW and Ninjak), with a few maybes (Timewalker, Doctor Mirage, Armorines and Secret Weapons), that leaves new titles and/or :o dipping into the Acclaim bag.

So at their core, given most of them were awful in execution, could any of those books (other than Quantum & Woody) work in the new VALIANT?

Here's a list for reference (or click here http://wiki.valiantentertainment.com/in ... Properties

Armed & Dangerous
Bad Eggs
Concrete Jungle
Doctor Tomorrow
Grackle
Grave Diggers
N.I.O.
PunX
Trinity Angels
Troublemakers

Personally, I think PunX (core concept of non-necromantic, non-harbinger, non tech-based super beings cropping up in one place) could work. Several of the others might even work in an anthology book...A tongue-in-cheek poke at Acclaim with several "comedy" stories (Trinity Angels, Troublemakers, Bad Eggs, N.I.O.) all headlined by Q&W.

I don't think you can even think about including the Acclaim Crime dime books into anything. Unless they end up putting them into Movie or Television. N.I.O. there was no excuse for that to even happen. Concrete Jungle was canceled before the first issue was released and they couldn't destroy the printed first issue.

Dr. Tomorrow that I could see...

I don't approve of this whole timetable idea. It will make for weak editorial decisions.

I would much rather VEI focus on putting out titles based on heroes that can connect nicely to the universe, so books like Rai, Eternal Warrior, Ninjak, a team book, and maybe a showcase title where they can tell one and done stories based on characters who may not fit into their own book. I wouldn't mind a sub-line down the road of titles that don't connect to the universe, similar to what Crossgen did back in the day, but for the forseeable future I would like VEI to focus on their core titles.

I wouldn't mind a few original characters too, or maybe some characters that never made it past the cutting room floor.

I think they should grow organically, spinning out new characters who seem to strike a chord with readers or where creators have a great idea. Expansion for it's own sake just to hot a pre-ordained number of books would be a recipe for disaster.

Naw, *SQUEE* that....I think they HAVE to create new characters down the road, not just reuse some of the same-old, especially mediocre acclaim.

So far the response I expected

The thought came to me because Warren was quoted as saying they will only publish new, original titles if the concept isn't better than something they already have in their back pocket. I also take that to mean if someone pitches a concept that could be rolled into a property owned by VEI, then they would roll it in.

I agree we will likely see several new characters/titles before we may ever see a former Acclaim title. But just because those books stunk doesn't mean it is impossible. We are seeing a new Bloodshot that is pretty good so far even though the original was never anything special. The new Shadowman will be incorporating some of the Acclaim run into its relaunch. And many board members keep saying they want to see new Quantum & Woody in some form or another.

While it would be a very long shot, who wouldn't by an anthology called "Ack! Lame!" staring Quantum & Woody with Troublemakers and Bad Eggs back-ups?

All I'm asking is to take off the "I'm too cool to consider anything Acclaim" goggles for a moment and think about the core concepts and if they could be taken to a new level by the VEI team. It's really no different than saying you want to see what VEI does with Ninjak this time around.

1 XO
2 Harbinger
3 Bloodshot
4 Archer and Armstrong
5 Shadowman
6 Rai
7 Eternal Warrior
8 Ninjak
9 H.A.R.D.Corps
10 Second Life of Doctor Mirage
11 Timewalker
12 Secret Weapons
13 Geomancer
14 Armorines

That's 14 titles that could be nicely reimagined without anything else original or dipping into the acclaim bag.

I would imagine they are eager to get the universe established and then introduce NEW Characters and titles.

15 Add Trinity Angels... since supposedly Warren is itching to remake them.
16 Q and W if things are able to be sorted out for it.

And add at least Two original titles to shake things up. easy.. OR..

17 GOAT and
18 Flo Dinosaur Hunter Hunter.

maybe...

19 The Destroyer
20 *SQUEE*

See easily 20+ titles without new properties. :P

OK, maybe bringing up the number of titles was detrimental to the discussion, point taken. So let me rephrase:

Are there any Acclaim titles, besides Quantum & Woody, who's core concept would be worth revisiting by VEI?

Pretty much anything. You can take just about any idea and remake it into something good. The question is... WILL it be remade into something good?

I think I'm all in for a spoof title... called " *SQUEE* ", Parody is protected expression... so... we could get a spoof versions of the GK3, VH1 and Ack! Lame! titles all tossed in one fun book...

Just saying.. :?

Please no. Also, I would be more than okay if they did not even include all of the pre-Acclaim books in the line-up either. It just dilutes the quality to have so many titles and it was one of the things that killed VH1.

Just in case VEI is even thinking about dipping their toes into the Acclaim stable, let me also chime in this internet focus group with a resounding HELL NO!!!!

I'm even fine with them never even referencing the Acclaim stuff in a winky-winky-nudge-nudge kind of way.

18 titles over 3 years of continuity. Is it possible that any new characters could appear in those 3 years? Maybe we get a title for someone new.

I understand the current Bloodshot is a mixture of both the Valiant and Acclaim Bloodshot concepts and that does not bother me.

You can get to 18 without even going to Acclaim:

15 PSI-Lords
16 The Visitor
17 Punx
18 Outcast

I'm not saying one would want to get there with the likes of Punx and Outcast, but it certainly is possible.

I'm not really against any title coming out.
I think they will be much more careful how they put the titles out if they dig into areas like Psi-Lords/Timewalker, etc.
Perhaps the way to do this would be a one-shot, or a limited series (2,3,4 part), and see what the interest is and how sales go.
You basically throw out what didn't work, rework it, and put together a tight story.
Anything's possible.

This is where I'm falling as well. While I know they are in the business to push out books, I'd rather see them establish a strong foundation and keep the quality high rather than expand for the sake of putting more titles on the shelf.

I agree with that sentiment as well. I would be perfectly happy with 8 titles (and so would my wallet) but would be fine with 12. Can you name more than 12 Marvel or 12 DC books worth reading right now? It would be a stretch for VEI to produce more than that and maintain the quality and sales necessary to be sustainable.

hate is a strong word.

Quietly disown, on the other hand...
What we need is innovation and even revolution—but not so much in the form of marketing ploys and doohickeys. What is needed is bold creative vision, excellent stories, and brilliant storytelling, in a word, entertainment. -- Jim Shooter
