I know some people love it, but I hated it. I have always been a huge Defenders fan and was really looking forward to this book. Fractions Iron Fist was one of my favorite series of the past 5 years, so his involvement as writer had me excited as well.

Then I read it and the characterization just seemed...off...and the tone was...confused.The storyline was overly complicated, but not in the good, Johnathan Hickman way. The comedy seemed forced and bad, often detracting from the scene instead of enhancing it. On top of all that, the art didn't do it for me.

Part of me just hates the fact that the Defenders are always treated as a joke. Individually, Strange, Surfer, Namor, Hulk are usually portrayed as bad-*SQUEE* if flawed heroes. But suddenly they are on a team and they are a joke? I don't get it. The original Defenders runs infused some comedic aspects, but did so in a way that didn't turn the whole series into a joke. These are some of the biggest power players in Marvels universe and they deserve better.

It's just my opinion. I can understand why people like it. It is different from most of Marvels books and a few of the concepts are interesting. But for someone who got back into buying comics a few years ago because of the release of The Last Defenders, I couldn't get past issue 3...not sure if that says more about me or the series.

Maybe a few spoilers below for anyone who hasn't read Fraction's Defenders...

I picked up the first issue and immediately dropped it. I thought Dr. Strange's characterization was horrible and I was really disgusted by the interaction between him and the grad student he um...interacted with. Doc is a much classier guy than that and I thought it brought him down a bit. The Surfer was also pretty bad, as I've been reading his adventures for 20+ years and never has he been portrayed as some innocent, child-like *SQUEE* that he was in the first issue.

That being said, I was hanging out at a comic shop one day and read the first 6 issues and I have to say it got MUCH better after the second issue or so. Doc and Surfer were reined in a bit to be closer to the characters I knew and loved. I've never liked Iron Fist as much as I do with Fraction writing and same goes for Red She-Hulk. Just the over-the-top superheroic aspect of the book is a lot of fun. With so many modern superheroes up against terrorists, secret societies and other fairly realistic threats I can;t tell you what fun it is to see The Defenders go up against an insane immortal descendant of one of the Three Wise Men and find and ancient wish-granting machine.

I'm not saying it's the best thing going, but I'm thoroughly enjoying each issue and I'm glad I gave it a second chance.

Totally agree with your points on Doc and SS, so I will trust your opinion on the changes. The high adventure, kookie cosmic threats were the only endearing portions of the book to me, so if the character portrayals improved, it may be worth a shot again. Maybe I will check out the trades down the road.

I think the last Defenders/The Order series had at least a reason as too why Dr. Strange, Namor, The Hulk, and the Silver Surfer didn't get along and that was the where most of the humor came from, my problem was the insane amount of 30+ years of continuity and back story that Busik and Larsen put in and made it at times next to impossible to understand what was going on. I can't say that I hated it but it was far from the best work that either one of them ever did. It however has left me very leary of The Defenders as a series in general.

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about that run either. Honestly, there probably hasn't been a solid Defenders series for the past two decades. Even though none of them seem to click with readers, Marvel continues to produce Defenders series in the same comedic/mis-characterized style. The Last Defenders by Kurt Busiek was actually pretty good, but had terrible art and some questionable cast (Emperor Krang, the new Nighthawk) and design choices (Hellstorm).

Some Marvel Now preview stuff here. I really think Bendis will knock All New X-Men out of the park. Also looking forward to Iron Man, given the creative team, Captain America and Uncanny Avengers for the same reason. Wondering if Spidey will be relaunched with a number 1. I can't see how Marvel won't do that.

Chuck R from Mile High hated it the first time Marvel relaunched. He said it would give collectors a reason to drop titles. I received his latest marketing email in which he enthusiastically embraces this one, though. Can't beat 'em, join 'em, eh?

The only reason why I'm giving Uncanny Avengers a chance is because of John Cassaday. Having never read anything by Matt Fraction, so he had better hit the ball out of the park because if doesn't I will drop the book if Cassaday is on it or not.

I *think* it has been reported that at least one major book will not be renumbered, and it seems safe to assume that ASM is that book.

Well it's not The Fanastic Four or X-Men: Legacy since both books are getting canceled and in the case of The Fantastic Four it will probably be restarted and renumbered again.

I hope they don't relaunch x-force, one of the only great Marvel books coming out. Seems to be rumors Daniel Way might work on the potential relaunch who I'm not a big fan of at all.

I read some stuff about the new Marvel Now! Deadpool, and I gotta say I think I might hate it. He's gonna be able to fly now? His healing factor is back? :? Scarred face again? His Penis can foretell the future? :? :hm:

One variant cover has him throwing out his "Uncanny X-Force" costume!!!
