It all started with Unity 0 for me.
I've been reading the boards (er lurking) for little while now so I suppose post No. 1 should be my origin story as it were:
I was in high school in 1992-3 reading the usual: X-men, Batman, Spider Man, etc. and the local comic shop had a copy of Unity 0 near the counter so I grabbed one as I was getting the weekly books. I read it and thought: "Hey, this is pretty cool." so when the actual Unity issues started showing up I was immediately hooked. In my opinion, the art was better than what the other studios were putting out and the story was amazing in the way it brought all of the titles together. I hadn't seen a crossover of that scale before. X-O Manowar was my favorite character then so I grabbed more issues from that series than I did of the others post-Unity pretty much stopping when I left for college.
In college I moved on to CCG's and let comics slip away altogether. Fast forward a number of years with WoW hitting the market I had left just about any other hobby behind (Thankfully, I'm older and wiser and have broken the MMO habit.) and that's where things stayed until recently when I heard about the Valiant re-launch. I've got a friend that's a huge Valiant fan so shortly after we talked I searched out a few local shops, including the one I went to WAY back in high school, though at it's new location, to grab copies of X-O 1 and Harbinger 1 and loved them! Particularly Harbinger, which is sort of odd as I said earlier X-O was the business when I was younger and I didn't pay a lot of attention to Harbinger. Age I guess. Funnily enough the owner of the shop actually recognized me though I had to re-introduce myself as it had been quite a while!
Regardless, my friend showed me the Valiant Fans website on one of his visits and I grabbed the VH1 checklist which I've used to scour comic shops .50 bins to pick up a bunch of back issues left over from the glut of the mid 90's and started reading through the stories I missed. Honestly, I'm sort of glad I got out when I did as in my opinion the quality in both art and writing really started to suffer in the later issues. I read some of the last issues of X-O and it was all over the place! I was grateful for the reduced cost of entry to get those issues.
Hopefully the quality of the re-launch will continue at the high standard I've seen and I'll be in it for long haul. I haven't had a pull list at a comic shop in over 15 years. Valiant brought me back, and I've not been disappointed. I'm looking forward to reading the new books weekly and adding to the discussion. This appears to be quite the community that's grown in the missing years. Pretty cool to be around for the Renaissance.
