Saga
I recommend Saga to anyone who enjoys a good space opera. It reminds me just a little of the Metabarons mixed with ....something more lighthearted and modern.
Anyone else reading this series?

Re: Saga
Best comic on the stands.
I wouldn't use "lighthearted" to describe this series. I don't think that is the right word to describe sextillion.

Re: Saga
It's not a book you "flip through" and rush to judgement on. It's one you sit, read and understand over time. Much like Sandman, this isn't a series made for little bites, but rather one long meal made of many courses, each bit to be savored.Elveen wrote:I had 2 signed #1s I got at Wondercon. Re: Saga
Big thanks to Iggy for sending me the first issue. I enjoyed the concept of the first issue. I can see how Elveen may have been put off by the "scene" with the robots in issue 1, but none of that has turned up (unless issue 4 lives up to its name). I have only read up to issue 3 but have enjoyed this series. Having kids makes me appreciate the "work" Marko and Alana are undergoing with the newborn. Really enjoyed the concept of the "stalk" in issue 3.xodacia81 wrote:It's not a book you "flip through" and rush to judgement on. It's one you sit, read and understand over time. I don't agree with all of Vaughn's political beliefs. I ended up dropping Ex Machina due to the propaganda it was promoting, but I have enjoyed Saga as a sci-fi read and will read it until Vaughn pushes more political beliefs. This book, Conan, and Manhattan Projects are the only monthly books I am trying to get when I am in "civilization."

It's probably not your style. If you read the first issue and it didn't grab you, the last few issues probably wouldn't do much for you.
I'm loving it though.

Saga is pretty good, it's hooked me. Seems to be part Star Wars, Dune and part ghost story. I'm hooked.

Oh yeah, this issue goes way beyond just a name. Still a great book and I think the "disturbing or nasty" parts, as some call them, are there for a good reason.tarheelmarine wrote:Figured as much with the planet's name.iggy101us wrote:Yeah. Re: Saga
IMHO it's a good book having read only the first 2 issues, but I honestly don't think it's a book that is going to appeal to everyone though.

Re: Saga
Agreed. Although, mass appeal doesn't always mean something is good, just popular. I am still deciding issue by issue if I'll stick with Saga, but so far it's great fun. The letter column was really funny in #4...Cyberstrike wrote:IMHO it's a good book having read only the first 2 issues, but I honestly don't think it's a book that is going to appeal to everyone though.

It was cool that he noted that people sent in the actual pages from the books instead of photo copies.

I thought #4 was tame, and the only controversial thing is the human trafficking. I think it's good he's bringing more attention to that terrible crime. I liked The Will's solution.

Re: Saga
Pay close attention to the artwork. There's full anatomy. I am not saying it was shocking for me, but I am saying that it wasn't just a name. The planet earned the name. As for The Will...great solution. Too bad he can't take a visit to Harrisburg...tarheelmarine wrote:Spoiler Alert!xodacia81 wrote:Oh yeah, this issue goes way beyond just a name. I have read the first 4 issues so far. Probably gonna drop it after #5. I simply do not like the artwork or the "weirdness" of the setting. That added to the unnecessary foul language and absurd nudity continually mar what I think is actually a solid tale. Too bad.

Re: Saga
My favourite book on the stands right now. Reminds me of something that Jodorowsky and Moebius might have collaborated on (someone mentioned Metabarons above, though I'm more reminded of The Incal- either way, the book has a very European flavour and I could easily imagine it being published by Humanoids), but retains the down-to-earth quality and character depth that Y: The Last Man had.
It is most certainly a mature readers title, but given the politics already working beneath the surface of the plot this was not exactly to be a surprise (two ethnic groups who have been fighting each other as long as they can remember, ie: Palestine and Israel, and a colonizing, imperialistic regime whose best interests and maintenance of power are reliant on a continued war effort, you can draw your own conclusions).
The adult content of the title may turn some readers off, but I think you're missing out on what is and will continue to be a great story.
This book's biggest draw for me, aside from the absolutely gorgeous art by Fiona Staples, is Vaughn's strength at depicting realistic, deeply human characters. Until Issue #4 I thought the best part of the side-plot involving The Will was his somewhat gimmicky sidekick, Lying Cat. After the final pages of Issue #4 though, I couldn't help but feel that the depths of this character have not even begun to be plumbed.
I am with this title for the long haul.

Re: Saga
Yeah, I just guess I had an expectation of what I thought it would be given the great word of mouth and it just didn't quite live up. I have , however reconsidered dropping it as I have come to the realization that even though its not the book I want it to be , it still really is one of the best written titles on the stands. So I'm on board the Saga train for a while longer it seems.
