Jargon is fun for insiders, but terrible for outsiders.

It's much more clear to outsiders what "Valiant" means, compared to VH4, NVU, DNV, etc..

It's much more clear to outsiders what "Classic Valiant" means, compared to VH1.

Why would we want to create a higher barrier to entry to our Valiant-lovin' community here than already exists?

I disagree. I think the system we've been using so far is not complicated in the least and has worked just fine.

Ok.

But you're wrong.

Have we ever had to explain to anyone what "VH1" and "VH2" mean?

Is it conceivable to you that not knowing what people are talking about when they talk about "VH1" and "VH2" might be a turn off to someone browsing the board and thinking about contributing?

I guarantee, it is a minority of people that know about Valiant that refer to the classic stuff as "VH1".

If you look at this board as an example that this jargon is easy to get up to speed with, you are looking at a sample that has self selected themselves to use this jargon.

Come on DJ, you're a mod here. You should be working to make this community more accessible, not less so.

More accurately, it's not that you're wrong, DJ. Yes, the jargon is easy to understand, but you seem to be missing my point that jargon itself, no matter how easy to understand, is always a barrier to entry to any group.

When I joined, back in ought 11, as it were... I had no clue. VH1 meant bad 80's music videos - like it does to most of the real world still.

Truly can't tell you how many times I thought about posting, then didn't.

Hey can we get a list of ACRONYMS and sticky it!
I don't know what is meant by "VH1" (i keep thinking of the video music channel!) or VH2 or VH3. Let alone NVU!
QR ? What's that?
And if I didn't dig long or deep enough, APOLOGIES, just point me to the thread.

Thanks! :thumb:

OK I guess there's a thread deciphering the acronyms but I'd really like a READ ONLY listing without all the sniping and unfiltered noise. Hopefully managed by the ADMINS.

Feel me now?

Chris
That's what i refered to it as (NVU) in my thread about Valiant w/o Magnus and Solar. I wasn't sure what to call it. I think Nuvu is catchier than VH4.

That's what made me realize the "new" Valiant needed a distinctive title! Also, having realized Acclaim's VH2 SUCKED almost immediately, I stopped reading about 3 or 4 months into it so I have NO idea about VH3 at all!

VH1 - Original Valiant
VH2 - Acclaim's Valiant
VH3 - ?
VH4 - New Valiant Universe

Also, the "new universe" kinda reminds me of Marvel's experiment in the 80's. Anyone remember that? Comics like Starbrand and Mark Hazard: Merc? Really crappy comics!
Them's fighting words round these parts!
The New Universe was inconsistent, but had some outstanding stories. Anyone who has read the New Universe's DP 7 and Psi-Force will see how much they influenced Harbinger. Shooter's Star Brand was nothing short of brilliant, imo. I loved every issue.
Valiant is the son of the New Universe.

I like it, it's immediately clear what each of those mean.

I still prefer "Classic Valiant" to "90s Valiant", but that's personal preference.
PFunkJAzz wrote:QR ? What's that?
Quick Response. That one's not our fault. But, QR is what it is. "QR Code" hasn't yet hit cultural saturation like other common acronyms, like TV, CD, or DVD, but it might be on its way.

I just call it Valiant!

You can call the rest VH1, VH2.....but Valiant right now is all that matters. :thumb:

Not a bad idea. For some reason, I like calling it the new Valiant.
Valiant is the son of the New Universe.

The problem with "Classic Valiant" is that if you're holding a Valiant book (and you're an outsider), you might not know if it's classic... but you can tell whether it's 1990s... the date is in the indicia.

Super accessibility. I like it.

I may need to change to "90s Valiant" from "Classic Valiant".

Sure, but the problem with Valiant 2012 is that in seven months or so it'll be 2013 (unless the Mayans were right).

Classic Valiant, Original Valiant, 1990's Valiant, whatever. The current Valiant should be just that, Valiant.

Valiant 2012 tells when the universe (re-)started. It would be the correct name forever... because even if you start in 2013, you don't have Valiant until you have Valiant 2012.

That's still not a reason not to refer to the new books as Valiant.

It's Valiant. It's back! It's f*cking go time. It doesn't say "Valiant 2012" on the covers and I'm not a member of Valiant2012fans.com.
