Will there be a Marvel reboot or relaunch this year?
Do you think there will be a Marvel reboot or relaunch this year? Please ignore the 'There will' option, which clearly a mod put in to make me look foolish.

Re: Will there be a Marvel reboot this year?
Might need a relaunch option dude.
You already know my thoughts on this, it may not be a reboot, but a relaunch is on it's way in the next twelve months, they will gauge sales from AVX and any extra push from the Avengers movie, then make a plan. Not a single reason why this isnt happening.

I changed it to reboot or relaunch. Either one would be great by me. I believe there will be, but want to get as much input on this as possible. Thanks, bro.Draco wrote:Might need a relaunch option dude.

Hey guys,
I edited one of the options to read reboot or relaunch, and it reset the poll. Please re-vote if you already did! Thanks.

I've no idea what happened there! I can only surmise the mods are messing with my head.Draco wrote:StarBrand wrote:Hey guys,

At this point, I might leave it. If someone voted for 'there will', I guess that's a yes vote.

A relaunch would be a start point with #1's that come after a monster event, where anyeon can jump on board, but previous continuity is still in tact, but the re boot is all new, no connections to the past. Though of course all the supposed rules are broken almost immediately anyway, lol.

Re: Will there be a Marvel reboot this year?
That's what I thought. I don't see the point of a relaunch then, they've tried that in the past and eventually just went right back to the old numbering. It created quite a mess for me when it came to trying to figure out things with Amazing Spider-man.Draco wrote:A relaunch would be a start point with #1's that come after a monster event, where anyeon can jump on board, but previous continuity is still in tact, but the re boot is all new, no connections to the past. As much as I hate reboots, I think it's the only cure for the cluster-

This is a massive talking point for us here, we often muse over the possibilities.etos45 wrote:That's what I thought. As much as I hate reboots, I think it's the only cure for the cluster-that is Marvel continuity right now. It's my understanding that it's working out pretty well for DC.
A relaunch for Marvel would be nothing new, you can go to several points in the last twenty years, where they did so, but didn't announce it as such, which makes sense, the industry was a different place with way too many old school folks still involved, so it would never have sold, but they sneaked it out all the same.
Mid Nineties when Marvel separated their books into each little franchise, X-men, Spidey, Avangers, FF, Edge, Cosmic etc etc. Not a relaunch as such with new numbers, but a relaunch all the same, Start points across the board, though not alot of new #1's.
This was also done early 2000,s when they did retro covers 70's style, the 1st Straczynski Spidey, morrison X-men etc etc, legacy numbers on relevant covers and so on. Pretty much across the board you could try most titles and skip what cam before if you wanted.
Then of course the best of all in House of M, which lends to whatever Marvel wanted for any given character, the argument being that after reality warped back, all said changed were made, leaving them with a good start point and monster get out clause for anything that contradicts what came before House of m, but was never really touched upon.
DC just always made a point of saying they were re starting a new and making massive changes, Crisis, Zero Hour, infinite Crisis and now the ultimate re boot in the New DC 52.
I could go on about this for hours, lol

Re: Will there be a Marvel reboot or relaunch this year?
I think the DC reboot/relaunch has seen more good than bad. It got me to try books I hadn't tried in years-JLA, Aquaman-and to stick with The Flash, which I was ready to drop. There are other books I missed out on because of how quickly they sold out, like JLI, Demon Knights, JLD, Superman and Action Comics.
If done right, Marvel could see a real boost, but I have serious doubts about it given the nature of Marvel fandom and resets, ie, Brand New Day.

Re: Will there be a Marvel reboot this year?
At least DC is up front, and in most cases, the early returns are quite good, as are the events themselves. Aside from Countdown to Crisis, the "events" have been uniformally (52 and Blackest Night, take a bow) good-though FC is up for debate-and the relaunches/reboots have mostly worked out. I think Zero Hour is too ignored, but it gave us a lot of good stuff, not the least of which was a fantastic Starman series/reinvigorated Shade, a cleaner background for The Hawks and The Legion and some very good changes to Aquaman and Flash. It also settled Kyle Rayner into the role of Green Lantern and was the point where Connor Hawke appeared in Green Arrow.Draco wrote:This is a massive talking point for us here, we often muse over the possibilities.etos45 wrote:That's what I thought. I really enjoyed Flashpoint and what I've read of The New 52. Of course, I'm a big DC guy from way back. Marvel? Give me the movies and the cartoons. The books have always seemed clumsy to me, unless you're talking about 1602 or Marvels.

What Marvel needs to do is not reboot, but take that next step and evolve to the next phase - transition the old and bring in the new - younger/newer characters and start retiring some of the old stand-bys - it can be done. Marvel made its name originally by taking an old concept and taking it to the next level - now it needs to do it once again.

I agree, a new start point is cool, but they need to maintain what came before and grow it.

Agree - that's why I call for a transition instead of a reboot - there are so many potential storylines that they can go with - just pick one and go with it - a period where the past and future are intermingled and then move the story forward.Draco wrote:BruceReville wrote:What Marvel needs to do is not reboot, but take that next step and evolve to the next phase - transition the old and bring in the new - younger/newer characters and start retiring some of the old stand-bys - it can be done. I mean could you imagine if instead of story progression - The Lord of the Rings just rewrote the same story, but from a different angle. Same adventures - same plot twists - same characters ------ boring.

Re: Will there be a Marvel reboot or relaunch this year?
I keep thinking this may be the high water moment for these franchises.BruceReville wrote:What Marvel needs to do is not reboot, but take that next step and evolve to the next phase - transition the old and bring in the new - younger/newer characters and start retiring some of the old stand-bys - it can be done. Why not retire a few people? I keep thinking of the Crisis thing in DC. It happened at about fifty years, right? Eliminate a few of the people. Forever. Kill Human Torch, and make the guy STAY dead. Forever. Period. In a few years, perhaps bring the character back as a new person. But never, ever, NEVER bring back Johnny Storm. This changeover could be iconic. Show a bust of the character at a compound, retire another into an old folks home, have someone else stay on as an older adviser, etc.
But get RID of these people. This, if done correctly, could have the Watchmen-esque after effect that could change the direction of the industry forever.
Unfortunately, if and when any of these people die, we'll find out in two years that it was a clone, skrull, hybrid, twin, alien or other waste of time.
DC was able to stranglehold the industry. Through the change.
Marvel may look like bad copies.
