Eternal Warrior #4 cgc bought CHEAP

I know its not a complete steal but I got Eternal Warrior #4 (first Bloodshot) cgc 9.6 for $11

Congrats, that is a great price. I have been searching ebay routinely for a CGC 9.8 of that issue. Never seems to show up though.

Why is everyone so hot and bothered with CGC graded books? You can't read them once they are slabbed. It's sad, really.

No disrespect was intended. Seriously though, I just don't get it. I thought that was the point of a Comic "Book". I see the same thing in the Videogame market these days too. It just doesn't seem right to me because the item in question doesn't serve it's purpose. Videogames are made to be played. Comics are made to be read. Not to say that there aren't special exceptions to the rule like an Action Comics #1 or some such with the difference being that there are so few known to be in existence.

I agree with the idea that comics should be read, but I also see the value in the CGC service. It's two-fold for me: one, if I am going to pay NM price for a Hulk 181 then I would like some assurance that it is actually that grade. CGC provides that assurance, and I can always crack open the case and read it if I want to. However, there are cheaper ways to read Hulk 181. Two, CGC-ing a book is like framing - it makes a nice display case for your prized comics. I've been eyeing a few of my favorite Valiant covers in a CGC case for that reason. It's not much different in price from taking the comic to my local frame shop and having them use acid free mattes and UV protecting glass. Plus the CGC aspect makes it easier to sell to another collector should you need to vs a custom frame.
But yes, slabbing every book printed so that it can't be read defeats the primary purpose of comics.

I think everyone has pretty much explained it. Most people will have a copy to read and then possibly a CGC copy to store/enjoy or whatever. I think most people here have read or read all their issues otherwise, there wouldn't be such a fanbase for a line that's been dead a long time.

Another thing to keep in mind. CGC books will allow future generations to enjoy the comics we enjoy now.

Congrats to the OP on picking up a great book at a great deal!

ok, since I started the thread I'll chime in....I picked this up and was stated via Greg...I bought this book off the shelf new and have it in my collection...I have finished my complete run of Valiant Era 1 books (which includes golds, variants, etc...EXCEPT A&A gold) and now I want real nice copies of key books. If anyone knows me here on these boards they know how much of a fanboy I am for the A&A and Eternal Warrior series... thus I even have a goal to complete the A&A series in cgc 9.8 (about 30% finished). Anyways, I picked this up as I want to keep collecting these books but in a way I can handle them with no thought of destroying them and also I love the look of a high grade book that I have memories of when I was first dating my wife....so These Valiants I get in CGC are for my personal reasons, I'll never sell them or most of the other things I collect...But I appreciate those who sell and buy for the money too

It's all good man. I guess the problem I have with CGC graded books is the automatic price gouge at the top of the auctions. I see brand new comics sometimes that are being sold for $29.99 right out the door because it has been slabbed and a number popped onto the plastic case. It makes me sad is all. Like I said above, I understand the exceptions to the rule, I just never did understand the desire to have everything in a CGC. The hype over the books just never appealed to me p[ersonally. I did not mean to *SQUEE* all over your purchase. Sounds like you got a great deal on something that you would want in your collection. Awesome. Then again, the fact that I don't have a complete original Valiant collection is probably another reason I don't get it. No reason yet to go back and rebuy what I already have.

You do realize that it costs about $29.99 to have a book slabbed, right? Basically the first $25-$30 spent on any CGC-graded book just pays for the grading. The dollar amounts OVER $25-$30 represent a value being paid for the book itself.
For brand new comics, usually there's almost no value in the book... and the buyer is just hoping that the value will come in the future or they just want a "certified near-perfect" example of a comic they like to collect.

For older comics, CGC grading is more than $30, but it's often possible to purchase CGC graded books for under $30, essentially getting a discount on the grading and getting the comic for free... for example, CGC 9.6 Eternal Warrior #4 for $11.

I was unaware it cost that much to slab a book. Like I said, I have never been a fan of the process so never really looked into it. However, if that is the case, then for sure he got an amazing deal. Awesome buy at $11.00. No offense was intended still.

I really wonder why sellers grade books like these to sell? It's almost a guaranteed loss and multiplied by dozens of books can really add up!

a small example...my best mate bought a real nice X-Men annual #2 for $80.....got it graded at a 9.6 and sold it for $900!!!!!! If the original seller would of had it graded and spent $29, he would of had one HECK of a profit....but now my buddy does

Just a few guesses...
The original submitter may have:
...believed the book would be CGC 9.8 (or better).
...believed that $25 was possible even for a CGC 9.6, so they weren't risking much.
...not submitted books before.
...talked themselves out of pre-screening for 9.8 to save a few dollars on pre-screens.
...had so many other CGC graded books turn a profit that they're ok to take a loss on a few.

Or some combination of these.

Another guess would be that an obscure group of fans are looking for said book and now other people from back when have crawled out of the woodwork to look for said books as well because said company is the new hot thing? Just saying. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. My local shop actually has a four for a dollar bin and I have been scoring some good Valiant stuff lately to fill in gaps in my co0llection. Can't complain there. Don't ask what that has to do with the CGC grading books because I don't know. Just felt the need to say so.
