Sweet Spideys! There are some values to be had at lonestar at times. What did they grade those books at?

I plan to trade in some stuff to them to knock out a few more books from my DD list or maybe upgrade some Spideys.

It doesn't.

In fact, I don't even think CGC notes it on the slab. I may be wrong though.

I remember reading somewhere from them that date codes that were stamped on the cover, or written in pencil, by the retailer, are allowed. There even seem to be people that prefer them over the non stamped versions.

I believe it is someone on the cgc website, maybe under FAQ.

That seems strange. It did not come that way from the publisher. ??????????

I think the mentality behind it is that date stamps or grease pencils marks were so common they are almost "ok". As mentioned, some people like them because they are like a date stamp in time.

I don't mind a neatly placed stamp at all. I kind of have the same mentality for a subscription crease. Either way though, it should be disclosed upon sale so people know what they are getting.

Agreed - you have to carefully evaluate available scans but there are definite values.

Speaking of which, the Spideys were graded 6.0.
I'm doing as you mentioned, upgrading my Spideys. In fact, my old copies (which already were pretty nice) are currently up on ebay here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/*hulk181*/m.htm ... 4340.l2562" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Exactly - I'm not overly concerned with date stamps on high grade silver and bronze. And as suggested, it's somewhat neat to know the exact date a book hit the newsstand.

But subscription creases are a personal pet peeve. So it goes... :?

Me too <I'm trying to convince myself they are ok because I have an otherwise nice #14>. :!:

My pet peeves that I'm trying to replace on all my books are rusted / oxidized staples, missing pages or coupons, unattached staples or spine splits. Yeah, I have a pretty low grade collection.

Just got these in for a nice price...

Magnus Robot Fighter 1-4, Variant 1 (less than 2,000 printed), Reprint 1 of 1963 original and TPB collecting 1-4 (less than 2,000)
Dr Solar 1-7, Variant 1* (2,200 printed), SDCC Variant 1 (1,000 printed), FCBD 1, and C2E2 Variant 1 (1,000 printed)
Mighty Samson 1-3, Variant 1 (800 printed)
Turok Son of Stone 1-2, Variant 1 (1,200 printed)
The Occultist 1 and Variant 1 (600 printed)

All books are dupes for me except those in BOLD. I've needed the bolded books for a while now.

I purchased a copy of X-Men 101 ages ago,and opened it to find a name in pencil on the first page - then researched and found it hardly affected grading - except in the most pristine of copies.

It just stuns me that some books can be in SUCH high demand - and price - and are relatively common - while others are UNcommon - but not in demand - and prices stay LOW.

Do you mean the books in my post ? If so, I don't think there is ANY demand for these and I got them on the CHEAP and wouldn't even think of paying any GOOD coin for them. Are you referring to the eBay auctions that the sellers always list them like that ?

I love it when the seller tries to pawn the book off as RARE. Like the Occultist #1 variant (that I have NOT confirmed has a print run of 600), THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN 600 PRINTED... to which my answer is "SO?" You can have only 25 of something printed and if there is no demand, don't try and demand a high price for it.

The C2E2 Variant 1 is a cool book but people aren't killing one another over it... I think I paid $.85 per issue on these and THAT is a TPB in there as well.

Perhaps it just stuns me that the demand IS so low. I think most of the books are garbage. Just junk. Like a moron, I will be buying the Mighty Samson and Turok when I can this week - mostly because I've stuck with them for this long - might as well stay with it.

Most of the Turok is junk-y, and many of them cost some coin. Okay, comparatively speaking.

Then, Acclaim comes out and produces half as much as any of the books - and they aren't worth anything. Some of them are even better than much of the stuff Valiant put out.

Collecting amazes me. How we can go 'crazy' for books we know will be worthless. The DC 52, for example. Or the Death of Superman. Back in my day - it was Northstar announcing his homosexuality that drove collectors crazy. Spider-Man 1 platinum vs Spider-Man 1 gold with UPC seal. Both limited, one CRAZY high - the other not so much.

The 90 Day average for CGC 9.8 Spider-Man 1 Platinum is $484.
The 90 Day average for CGC 9.8 Spider-Man 1 Gold with UPC is $462.

Which one is "CRAZY high - the other not so much"? :P

Back in 1990 - when the two came out - I can remember reading an Overstreet Price Guide that was the first to list Spider-Man Gold - with UPC. It listed for $25. The platinum Spider-Man was $500. Three months later, print runs of the two books followed, and collectors realized print runs were similar. THEN demand went up for the Gold UPC version.

It was the first time I remembered hearing about print runs.

So a member of my virtual training class at work informed me last week that her husband had a bunch of comic books that they wanted to get rid of and wanted to offer them to me. She shipped them off over this past weekend, and I received them yesterday. 264 comics. For free.

So I spent some time looking through them last night, and there's quite a bit of different stuff included. The biggest surprise was a little gem called Miracle Man #1, which looks to be in VF condition at least. Some other things that caught my attention were several issues of the early '90s X-Men during Andy Kubert's run as artist, issues from the late '80s/early '90s Transformers series from Marvel, many of which will fill in gaps from the nearly complete run I bought from someone a few months back, including issue #1 (which looks to have quite a bit of spine wear, probably G-VG shape). One of the most consistent books that appeared in the box was Venom. I never followed that title back in the day, but it appears to be a series of miniseries rather than a straight-numbered run. Anybody got input/insight on that? I just wasn't sure what was going on with that.

Got some other older DC books as well, like "Weird War Tales," an issue of Superman in the late-200s written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Curt Swan, some type of DC ghost stories books, and also some Charlton Horror Tales books.

Definitely the biggest find for me was the copy of Miracle Man #1, though. Anybody know what that's going for now?

Yep, there was a crapload of Venom mini series in the mid 90's. The earliest ones are pretty much worthless, stuff like Lethal Protector, but some of the later Venom minis are in demand with smaller print runs.
