Covers of reference

Post by sandman »

I can find at least 5 covers of Valiant comics that reference something, either a previous cover or outside art.

Harbinger #13 -> Dark Knight Returns reference
Harbinger #14 -> Michelangelo's statue "Pieta" of Mary and Jesus
Harbinger #24 -> remake of #1
Rai #24 -> remake of #1
XO #21 -> remake of #5

Are there any others?

The two Acclaim Solar 1-shots place him in paintings: "Man of the Atom" puts him into the "God-touching-Adam" part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling; "Revelations" puts him into Da Vinci's Last Supper.

Magnus #6 is loosely based on Marvel Comics #1 (1939)
(Not exactly, of course... but still darn cool.) :wink:

Archer & Armstrong 18 also goofs off the "God touching Adam" part of the Sistine Chapel. Trinity Angels 7 is the Showgirls movie poster. Some of the Gold Key Magnus issue reprints have the same cover (ie 1, 22; 2, 32).

Finally, let's try for a complete list of the Acclaim knock-off month: As cited, there's the Avengers 4 & Nick Fury 5; Troublemakers 8 is X-men 100.

The Second Life of Dr. Mirage #7 reminds me of the posters for the movie "Jaws"

Harbinger #29 - Reminds me of an older Avengers comic - I can't recall the issue number off hand

X-O Manowar #65 - reminds me of the Crisis cover, in which Superman is holding Supergirl's body.

A cover for X-O Manowar Volume 2 is a copy of a Death of Superman poster that came inside issue 75.

ACCLAIM

Bloodshot #5 - Nick Fury #1

Magnus #7 - A take on the gold key Magnus and Solars

Shadowman #9 - not sure, old 50's romance book (originally they advertised a much cooler House of Secrets #92 cover)

Trinity Angles #5 - was a spoof of issue #1

Quantum and Woody - Fantastic Four #56

Troublemakers #8 - X-men 100

X-O #10 - Avengers #4

I think that's all of them

Thanks.

That had been bugging me for awhile.

Do you know why some covers were changed at the last minute?

The cover to Trinity Angels, for example, was supposed to imitate the cover to Superman volume 2 #123, the Electric Superman.

"X-O #10 - Avengers #4 "

How is a hand poping out of the ground similiar to captain america leading a charge for an all new team? I'm confused. :shock:

I think it's XO vol 2 #10.

It seems the Acclaim series (Vol 2) had more cover references, but they were silver age references. Do you think it was a "gimmic" to get people to buy a dying brand? Some cheap publicity?

The original valiant stuff tended to remake their own covers to honor the history of the Pre Unity covers (Harbinger 24, Rai 24 and XO 21).

As I've understood it, DC told them not to use their covers. Magnus was supposed to be Action 1.

Armorines #12 and Uncanny X-Men #138 (Exit: Gunny vs. Exit: Cyclops).

Were the Armorines even seen again in VH1 after Armorines #12? How about any of the other characters who had their books cancelled at Birthquake? (sorry to get off topic)

In an issue of Jurgens' Solar.

Good call on the Armorines 12!

Have to admit that I never actually read those later third tier VH1 issues. Armorines & Hard Corps always seemed redundant to me (to say nothing of Psilords).

And Secret Weapons was the coolest idea with the worst execution since umm...Secret Defenders...
