You make some good points, Ian. Other than the fantastic Quesada artwork early on, the title really didn't have much else going for it. The Acclaim version came along and it was even worse. Makes you wonder what it is about the character that makes him "one of their favorites".

Even though I think the Valiant Ninjak stories are not that good in the beginning but they got better towards the end. I think the problem is the name "Ninjak". It just seems silly. Can you imagine a Western comic titled "Cowboi" or "Cowboyz"?Daniel Jackson wrote:ian_house wrote:If their big gun is Ninjak they are in alot of trouble. Re: Ninjak...I just recently read all the stuff from issues 0 up through the Chaos Effect, and it isn't a "bad" book but he just seems like a back up character. At least in the original valiant, he wouldn't even exist without the tie-in to Eternal Warrior (as I understood it, Neville Alcot's carerr was "made" via his ability to get Gilad to help his missions).
I dunno...a lot of the "popular" and "cool" characters from later in the Valiant series seemed like they were really just backup characters that got their own book just to fill up shelf space. Bloodshot was kind of important because he was the origin of Rai, but HARDCorps, Ninjak, Dr Mirage, Secret Weapons, Psi-Lords, and Armorines all seemed like filler material. Heck even the Turok series seemed mostly like filler material...like they were paying for the license so they wanted to make sure they put something out...
But maybe its just me. I want good stories, but it seems like a waste to put out a regular series that isn't crucial the the "Valiant Universe" as a whole.
We'll see how things go. I will almost certainly buy whatever they put out, but I think the Universe has a much higher chance at success if they stick with the "core" characters first and foremost, and use the non-core characters either as backup stories or occasional mini-series.

You're pretty much right on here, with a few exceptions like A+A, but that is really why there are so many fans of the Pre Unity stuff, and also, why although the print runs of later stuff was huge in a lot of cases (Turok 1), the quality just isn't there, especially in the storytelling.SJS4 wrote:Re: Ninjak...I just recently read all the stuff from issues 0 up through the Chaos Effect, and it isn't a "bad" book but he just seems like a back up character. I agree with all but ONE of those. I will tell you that Secret Weapons and Psi Lords, for sure, did not deserve their own book. My thoughts on the others are well known. I'll let you figure out who I think deserved a title.SJS4 wrote:Re: Ninjak...I just recently read all the stuff from issues 0 up through the Chaos Effect, and it isn't a "bad" book but he just seems like a back up character. Oh, and as for Bloodshot...he was so much more than the origin of Rai.

I rather enjoyed Dr Mirage, especially the first 12 or so issues.xodacia81 wrote:I agree with all but ONE of those.
