Sandman Vol 1 (issues 1-8). This was good, but a bit artsi-fartsi. Sam Keith's sequential storytelling didn't really work for me so I'm glad there's someone else midway through. I'm not entirely sure of everything that's going on or who all the different characters are or which wones are important to remember, but it was good.

A Doll's House is a pretty damn good second volume. Not a bad "volume" in the lot, imo.JonesyAZ wrote:...and it will get better400yrs wrote:Sandman Vol 1 (issues 1-8). Finished reading through my Megaton Man stuff yesterday. It's very seldom that intentionally humorous or satirical comics tickle me enough to actually make me laugh, but there were MANY times reading through Simpson's Megaton Man issues that I would actually giggle or LOL just sitting in my living room alone!
After finishing with that yesterday, I had to make the tough decision on what to start reading next. I finally decided to pull the Fourth World Omnibus, Vol. 2 off the shelf and dig into it. I read Vol. 1 about 6 months ago, so I'm having to refresh myself on some of it, but I have to say that I really enjoy the epic, mythological scale of what Kirby did with this. I'm constantly thinking of Joseph Campbell's work as I read these issues. In fact, I'm considering going back to grad. school to finish my Master's in Liberal Arts and I may focus my work in associating comic book mythologies with Joseph Campbell's monomyth.

I've been reading some Conan lately. (Dark Horse reprints of the Marvel Conan).
I have not read 1 story that I did not like. A bunch of it is kind of formulaic (about every 3rd story ends with a earthquake destroying the temple/castle/strong hold, but....
They are all different and unique in some ways. But of course Conan is such a great character, the kind of noble savage type.
I have a few more TPBs, but I'm going to switch to something else for a while.... not sure what, but Conan reprints are the bomb!

So I am going to read some Hellboy for a bit. I read a FCBD book "The Mole" and other stories last night. And I will be starting the Wild Hunt tonight.
I have really enjoyed every Hellboy book I have read. I like the fact that sometimes the stories a quick 4-5 page mini-stories and then sometimes a 5-6 issue run. For me, Hellboy might be the best mix of tone, look, and feel of any book I have read.
I'm really looking forward to reading these issues.
Also..... I have been slowly been putting together a BPRD run. I'm about 80% there! But I'm not going to read any of it until I can read all of it.

This weeks comics!
Batman Incorporated #4 - Morisson continues to turn whichever Bat book he is on into the most entertaining one. This issue was slightly more serious than the last few but still kept some of the humour. Morisson reintroduces an interesting character who should make the next couple of issues very interesting and although there is a different artist on this issue it didn't take me out of the story.
Batman -The Dark Knight #2 - The antithesis of Batman Incorporated. This is also Bruce but this time written and drawn by David Finch and is as dark in its narrative as it is in the art. The problem is Finch is writing a Batman of 20 years ago. If this had came out sometime after the DK or Year One it would probably have been revolutionary. But it's not, it's just overly violent and crap. SPOILER- At one point Bruce gets *SQUEE* off and breaks 2 of the Penguins legs and an arm! The *SQUEE* Batman indeed.
And it was 3 months late...
Fables 103- Was expecting to see some action in this one after the slow 1st issue to this superhero arc but this issue was also very slow and not alot went down. There are some interesting sub-plots brewing behind the superhero one.
Justice League Generation Lost #22 - Just a couple of issues to go before the big finale and the end of my favourite series of the past year, easily. Not a great deal happened here, but it was a nice chance for everyone to regroup before the end and still as entertaining as ever.
Also read the 1st two issues of the War of the GLs, will be back to chat about them if anyone cares.

I just got through reading The Transformers #13-17 and all have to say is: HOLY CRAP! I honestly didn't see the ending #17 coming! Jazz, one the most popular and beloved of Autobots does the unthinkable (and no he does not betray the Autobots)!
I love Megatron's new body (I would love to see a toy based off that design) and his plan to get revenge is interesting. Starscream's back-stabbing this time around actually makes sense and I loved his visit to Thundercracker and Starscream's fight with Brawn and the fact that Brawn beats him and has to make a tough choice between helping Thundercracker and bringing Starscream in was an excellent use of underused character by Costa.
The story is really great and even a little thought-provoking. I love how Costa uses characters in new and different ways, without completely destroying the characters, what Jazz does at the end of #17 makes sense in the context of the story, not out of bounds of for the character and I could see any of the Autobots (except for Optimus Prime and Bumblebee) doing the same thing.
The art is a mixed bag: Nick Roche's art sucks IMHO and thankfully he only does issue #13.
Don Figueroa can draw great looking TFs but his humans suck.
I think Alex Milne's art is getting a lot better but he seems to have trouble working with some of Figueroa's redesigns.
Overall:
I don't know where this story is going and I LOVE THAT! IMHO it keeps just getting better and better every issue. I know that the crybabies will cry foul like they always do screw them, this is how I WANT my G1 Transformers comics to be: unpredictable and a whole lot of fun.

Good call, I've heard people call "Jaka's Story" the best storyline of the Cerebus run, and I just don't see it. The text stuff that Sim used so often in this and later stories really gets boring and tedious to read. You probably won't be thrilled with "Melmoth" either, as it deals with the death of the Oscar Wilde character. Another one I didn't like much, but at least it's short. Things start cooking again with "Mothers and Daughters".dave wrote:I just finished up Jaka's Story by Dave Sim. Must say, I was disappointed. It seemed pretty boring to me. Could have been far shorter. I skipped a lot of the text. Never fully understood the Oscar Wilde character. Lord Julius was far more entertaining.

JLI: Generation Lost 1-12 -
pretty good as a quick read through. Fastest set I read today. It doesn't have the same feeling as the old JLI/JLE runs with the snarky laughs and drama but the characters working together are fine.
They need Guy Gardner, Gnort or L-ron in there at least.
Gotham City Sirens #17-21 - Favorite Bat book from the family of Bat Books, Hoping this one will survive the cancellations.

Sandman vol 2 - The Dolls House. Not my cup of tea. I like the overall story, but the stuff in the middle..... all the foo-foo stuff is a bit much for me. Way too Grant Morrison (the bad one) for me. I'll definitely try the next trade, but I may end up hitting the eject button on this series.
I see why it gets all the acclaim. It's just not my style so far.

The next trade is a set of short stories. What is the exact stuff you are having issues with?400yrs wrote:Sandman vol 2 - The Dolls House. Not my cup of tea.
