There are a lot of names comic fans will remember in terms of the library – X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, Ninjak, etc. – but the construction of this line will be a bit different in that the original Valiant comics had the old Gold Key characters at their center. As you've been discussing the best way to reintroduce the Valiant Universe to fans, what character (or characters) have been at the center of things? In other words, who's "the Superman" of this line?

Kothari: Valiant has a huge library of characters, and we have the Valiant Universe which is larger than any one character as it plays an invaluable role in supporting and strengthening all the characters within it. The Gold Key characters are part of our past, but they are not important to our future. Within the Valiant Universe framework, we are initially focusing on 9 or 10 of Valiant’s A-list characters, such as X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, and Harbinger, and the interactions between them.
Significant stuff in that quote. Suggestion of the Gold Key past, and reference to them as a part of the 'past.' NOT included, at least initially, at the start. Who, then, might be the other six or seven?

Certainly Shadowman, probably EW, and A&A. After that? Quantum & Woody? Armorines? Punx? Okay. Not Punx... But whom?

My guess of the "Valiant’s A-list characters":

Already quoted:
X-O Manowar
Bloodshot
Harbinger

Others:
Archer & Armstrong
Eternal Warrior
Shadowman
Ninjak
Rai
Quantum & Woody

within Harbinger you have multiple characters...would probably put A&A and EW in A list as well as Shadowman

I'd agree, except the source groups Harbinger.

On the list, I might replace Ninjak with HARDCorps or Armorines. None of these were my 'faves,' but I thought the second time around was not too shabby. Certainly could give Ninjak a run for his money - especially considering the second time around. Bleah.

I'd probably leave Dr. Mirage out, at any rate. Great potential that turned into a bad soap opera [Cue Walt Willey cameo].

I would think so and I hope they will take full advantage of the characters and premise. I also hope they include Mike LeRoi as a Shadowman (would really love to see another video game as well).

Thanks for the link, and thaks Dan for the others.

I like this quote:
"Valiant has retained an extremely passionate fan base"

Somehow makes me think of a Swedish proverb: For the one who waits for something good, the wait is never too long.

In the words of Droopy: "I am happy"

After Unity I was poised to be a Valiant guy first and foremost. Additionally, by time Turok #1 hit the shops just about every Valiant title was on my pull list. Had Valiant continued to produce consistently good comics and grown to encompass other mediums such as film, animation, and a more expanded toy line, I probably would have moved away from the DCU almost completely by now.

I could totally see my book cases full of Rai, X-O, Shadowman, Eternal Warrior, etc. swag instead of the vintage Batman collection currently displayed.

I find it interesting that as I contemplate my continued interest in the DCU, Valiant should promise to come back in a big way. Just yesterday I remarked to my buddy that he shouldn’t be surprised if I completely drop my pull list which is presently 100% DC.

I feel like history may be repeating itself. :hm:

Funny. Replace DC with Marvel, and Batman with X-Men, and it sounds a lot like I was 18 years ago...

I was a teenager just beginning to read comics monthly back in ’91. And while Batman ’66, The Super Friends and Batman ’89 helped foster in me an interest in comics, Valiant quickly became my comic book publisher.

At one point I was ready to trade my father’s Silver Age comic collection for those rare and HTF Valiants such as Harby #1, Magnus #0, and Unity #0 Red. (Thankfully my mom would not allow me to do so, and I’ve since purchased most of the more coveted Valiants on the cheap.)

But back in ’93 my pull list included just about every Valiant title, every Batman book and a few obligatory Marvels. And while Batman the Animated Series, Knight Fall and other things may have helped Batman and Detective remain on the pull list, it wasn’t until after college that I became a serious comic book and toy collector. By then Valiant was struggling and Marvel never quite maintained my interest.

Needless to say, I’m really excited!

It will be interesting to see how the stories unfold. Magnus and Solar were such strong cornerstones to the Valiant Universe. It will be hard for me to get rid of my, deeply rooted, preconceived notions of what I expect the line to be. I just wanna see X-O kill some Spider Aliens!

I’ve always identified more with the second wave of heroes: Rai, X-O, Shadowman, A&A, and Eternal Warrior. This is partly due to the fact that certain Solar, Harbinger, and Magnus issues were too far out of my reach financially, while the others titles I got to enjoy from the first issue.

It wasn’t until the trades made the first wave of titles more accessible that I really began to appreciate the universe as a whole. This may explain my lack of commitment to the Dark Horse line while I’m anxious to see the second wave of VH1 heroes back in print. Moreover, any other titles such as Bloodshot will just be icing on the cake.

Not necessarily limiting to 10 A-listers,
here's a few of the "breakdowns" that I could see in the new universe...
in terms of the storylines for past, present, and future.

Past (thousands of years back):
Gilad / Eternal Warrior
Armstrong
Ivar
Geomancers
Aric of Dacia
Spider-Aliens
The Sect
Immortal Enemy
various historical (kings, tribes, wars, etc.)

More Recent Past (such as the 1800s):
Shadowman (Nettie / Maxim St. James)
Master Darque (and Sandria and Anton Quiqley)
Eternal Warrior (and Armstrong and Ivar)
Geomancers
The Sect
Spider-Aliens
Immortal Enemy

Present:
X-O Manowar
Harbinger (Harada vs. the kids)
Bloodshot
Shadowman
Archer & Armstrong
Eternal Warrior, Ivar
Ninjak
Dr. Mirage
Quantum & Woody
Geomancer (Geoff?)
Master Darque
HARDCorps
Armorines
Spider-Aliens, Lydia
The Sect
Immortal Enemy
Erica Pierce?

Future (hundreds or thousands of years forward):
Rai
Eternal Warrior (and Armstrong and Ivar)
Spider-Aliens / X-O armors
Geomancers
Harbinger wars? (Harada in new bodies?)
Japan-in-orbit / Grandmother?
Erica Pierce / Mothergod?
Immortal Enemy? (Does he survive this far?)
Cult of Shadowman?
Elya?
Sentient robots?

... and just to throw another name out there for all time periods... Dr. Tomorrow

Plus, obviously, new characters who never appeared in the original universe.

I wonder if they'll stay true to the characters origins or if the slates are wiped clean?

I kinda see them doing both—starting over from the beginning but keeping with the origin stories except where The Western Publishing characters may make that difficult.
