This was the best issue of Solar by far. This really started to feel like a pre-unity Valiant comic to me now.
The main story is finally delving into Nuro and the consequences of what gave Solar his powers. The main conflict of the story.
I said before I think the first 4 issues were an attempt to set up the main story doing a more light-hearted adventure story. I don't think it worked all that well, especially with the shuffling artists. Now that we're getting to the meat of the story I feel like some of the magic is starting to come out.
The origin story "Solar Rise" is excellent. It has a very cinematic feel with the cross-cutting of 2 events giving enough info to move the story and deliver the action. It feels like a good mix between A & O and Gold Key Dr. Solar #1.
The art is the best I've seen in the line so far. A nice painterly style that's not overdone and fits the tone of the story perfectly. I scanned a page for those of you who are curious.

Before this issue, I had thought Solar was the weak link of this line. Now it might be becoming the linchpin that Valiant Solar was. I just hope with 2 artists they can get it out on schedule to build some momentum.

Ok I just finished the Solar #5 issue and feel pretty good afterwards. To me THIS had some of that Pre-Unity magic and I don't mean to compare Dark Horse work to Valiant work but this issue gave me a bit of that feeling that lead me to collecting everything in the Valiant Universe.
The first page of the Solar Origin story screamed BWS on both the art style and the writing. The timing between The Event back and forth with the Pre-Event was for me just perfect... A bit protracted but still left me wanting MORE and THAT my friends is the sign of a good comic, keeping e on the edge of my seat, eagerly waiting for the next issue.
Nicely done, Mr. Shooter !!!

The art was gorgeous! The only thing that bothered me a bit was
a) barely no one opens their mouths to talk. It's a little unnerving to go back and read it realizing it's just a bunch of stone poker faces.
b) Dr. Solar's expression during his speech doesn't change. He just stands there with his mouth closed, looking like he was drawn each time from the same reference photo.
Minor details though. It felt so Heavy Metal!

yup, almost like a dark side version of Solar it looks like. Maybe similar to Erica in that he got his powers like Solar did and similar to Harada since he runs a corporation.Knightt wrote:Looks like he could be a major villain with 'powers' much like Phil's ??hotwings1979 wrote:This was the best story so far. Maybe his now apparent need to be connected to the 'avatar' will evolve into something where he is not in need of being connected to it later.Ryan wrote:yup, almost like a dark side version of Solar it looks like. Whoa. That looks heavily photo referenced, if not straight up photo traced. I liked the line art in the other books. Glad I'm not buying this anymore.Ryan wrote:The art is the best I've seen in the line so far. A nice painterly style that's not overdone and fits the tone of the story perfectly. I'm not picky about art, but my one pet peeve is stuff that looks photo traced.

I agree. I picked up on that while reading. In that portion Gail looked like Sue Storm or the Sojourn girl that Greg Land draws. The Beyonder wrote:The art was gorgeous! The only thing that bothered me a bit was

Hadn't thought of that till you mentioned it, and I agree. Some of the scenes in the reactor reminded me of Frank Quitely a bit.The Beyonder wrote: It felt so Heavy Metal!
I loved the art in that portion of the book. It would be great if that was how the entire book was done.
Of course the page that we saw in the preview with all those rainbow colors was gorgeous.
This was a great issue, totally great. I am so happy. I am also happy to be this happy, because I was a bit worried.
It's also clear that all of these titles will eventually connect now as well.

I would say that this is my most favorite Solar book to date. I REALLY enjoyed the origin story.
I like seeing the emergence of 'villains'. The previous bad guys did not have the 'oomph' that I was looking for but this main bad guy with some kind of power associated with Doctor Solar's powers could be a real contender.
I am seeing Lovejoy being used throughout the books.
