How Did you Support VALIANT the First Time Around?
Greg obviously created this site, and Magnus had his Magnus Number Cruncher site, but what did everyone else do?
And if VALIANT comes back in a modern reincarnation of the original universe, would you go back to offering the same support again?

I bought one copy of everything once I was drawn in (on Bloodshot #1). I also bought extra copies of all the crossover issues (Chaos Effect and Unity) so I could keep them separate as a whole story arc. I would GLADLY do that again!! Hell, I might even buy 2 full runs - one for reading and one to just keep for myself.

i followed mainly shadowman, bloodshot and solar the first time around to begin with. I also followed dr mirage.
I didn't get into valiant pre-unity, but during unity.
I would certainly support a new valiant universe, if it was good. I'm very excited about the possibility, but there is no unconditional support

The first time around I started right before Unity because the cover art caught my eye and I was fairly new to comics so I was open to almost anything. I gathered as many of the back issues as I could at first since they were still on a reasonably low number for most of the titles. Then all of the Unity issues started arriving in my local comic book store so I quickly snatched all those up and then proceeded to buy every single book right ubtil after birthquake when I started to lose interest for whatever reasons. I just recently started going back to complete my collection now that I am older and have more money to spend.
It used to suck totalling up my weekly comic book bill when I only made 80 bucks a week to start.
So if or when they decide to start putting out the old books in the spirit of the Valiant I remember back in the early 90's I'll be right there all over again.

I was the typical wizard reader that bought every post-Unity Valiant issue to hit the shelves for over a year, and two or more of anything that looked collectible.
I would only support Valiant again if they got Jim Shooter back, or gave the same attention to character development and unified continuity that he did.

I started buying from Solar 1, and then bought everything that came out. once I lost interest in a book (geomancer, timewalker etc.) I stop buying em. followed some of my favs until the end (eternal warrior, shadowman) but gave up on most when I heard they were gonna be cancelled soon. tried acclaim books but didnt stick. then I cursed the day I got the "ugly kid joe" tattoo , and changed my named to X-O Dougowar.

I think that a good idea would be for people like Magnus to offer content from their site on the published comics.
Like imagine a section of the comics devoted to continuity, designed to catch new and old readers up to what happened in the old comics and the new ones.
Or sections devoted to technology, to characters, etc, all done by fans willing and able to do the work to be in line with the new owners plans.
It works for Star Trek, lol.

My support of Valiant was pretty typical. I bought all the titles I liked and tried out all the rest. Plus I wouldn't shut up about how cool the titles were to everyone I talked (something I still do
). Made some posts to let everyone know Unity 2000 was coming out and when. I'll probably do the same thing this time around but if given a chance I'ld definately do more.

Here's the flip side of the topic.
Say that the new owners do bring back the original VALIANT Universe picking up from where it left off but nine years later and they do something you don't like (i.e. Jack is dead), would you still offer your support if they did do something else you did like (i.e. _____)?

I don't really understand your question. Inevitably, any comic book is going to take directions that don't please ALL the fans ALL the time. So long as there's still something to enjoy in the book, why not continue to support it?ManofTheAtom wrote:Here's the flip side of the topic.

Yes.
thats the whole reason I buy them. Cause I like them. If they did something to one character I didnt like, say made X-O into a gay Mexican midget (not that theres anything wrong with that), then I wouldnt buy it. But if they changed a character from something I didnt like into something I did, I would buy it ( couldnt find an example).
Whomever does it will be dealing with an "old" fanbase but also will be trying to get a "new" fan base established.
Either way, I'll buy it and see if I like it. Just like everything else.

When I first opened my store in 1993,I had a video game called Robotron 2004 in the store, and I stripped all of the graphics off and had a sign shop make some large decals for the sides, using the image off of Magnus #0,And used the Magnus logo for the front of the machine to make it look like it was a Magnus machine. It's a pretty kick *SQUEE* game with a guy cruising around the screen blastin robots trying to save people walking around before they got taken out by the robots.I sent some pics of it to Valiant hoping to get it printed in a comic, but no such luck.I did get a couple gold copies of Magns #21 though.I ended up selling the machine to a customer of mine.I got a polaroid picture of it somewhere, one day when I find it I'll post it. i ended up starting with harbinger and then quickly started getting every other title for about two years, then became a broke college student. x-o and shadowman were always my favorites. i've been trying to hype valiant the past few months at the shop, if books get relaunched i'm all over it...hell i'll just start adding valiant titles to people's pull lists

i was lucky enough to be working at a comic store during the valiant days. my support was talking the books up and getting them out the door. my store was one of 5 in north carolina, south carolina, georgia and florida and we had the highest valiant sales of any of the other stores.
i'd make displays using the valiant comics. we had a pegboard and book racks that fit into it. i'd make a big sign with the valiant star on it that read "The Rising Star in Comics" and place the books around the sign. i think i still have that thing somewhere, it was huge.
i also made t-shirts to wear to conventions. i'd buy plain white t-shirts, stretch them out on a piece of card board with a valiant voice centerfold on it and trace it onto the shirt and color it with fabric markers. they actually came out pretty cool considering. the shirts would wear out long before the image did.

Picture please!david_albuq wrote:That sounds VERY cool Joey! I -loved- that Robotron game.
I supported Valiant by getting its logo on my left ankle. I showed that to Layton & Gonzolez at the '94 Chicago Comicon and it netted me about 10 golds.

PS, hope Joey finds his picture soon, sounds cool!
