Read the Shadowman TPB

I was kind of dissapointed. It didn't have that deeper story of a personal struggle like the Solar (A&O) and Magnus (Steel Nation) had. It felt a lot like a Batman type of book.

It was sure creepy, though. A lot of people killed in that book. In issue 6, where that family of crazy people all get shot...It's haunting. They were evil, but it's still disturbing.

The characters are cool, the setting is cool. And Lydia appears! Boniface thought she was hot; X-O thought she was ugly.

Question about the "love" scene in issue 1:
When Lydia says "Excuse me while I change...My special little cocktail takes a little longer to work than yours did...," was she trying to turn Boniface into an alien or something? Is that how he got his powers?
"...[Wizard Magazine] regularly cheapens and poisons our field."

The explanation I remember goes like this:

Nettie and her coven were going to give Jack his magical powers, but Darque sent the Spider-Alien Lydia to poison him so that the powers wouldn't take hold.

In the end the energy was injected into the mask of shadows, but in time Jack became able to control it.

I have the feeling they changed around a bit, and that was the explanation they ended up with.

So do I.

A lot of the stuff that happened in Shadowman after Shooter left came out of nowhere (i.e. the above explanation, the 9/9/99 date, etc).

Originally Jack was biten and got the urge to go out and rid the night of demons from that. There was creative conlict between Englehart and Shooter so a little of the first and most of the second issue was rewritten by Shooter and Englehart left (Someone posted Englehart's script for #2 on here a while back). The date of Jack's death (9/9/99) was extablished by Shooter in Unity and mentioned in his original plot for Rai 0.

Rai 0 was drawn from that plot but Shooter got the boot before he could script it, so others scripted it and Master Darque was added in the dialog. Shortly after that they retroactively made Nettie a voo doo priestess and said a voo doo coven gave Jack powers (healing, strength, energy "blasts," ect) to be their "Shadowman," their enforcer who fights Darque. They rectoned the bite a little saying Darque recruited the spider aliens to bite Jack and corrupt him. The bite blocked his power (for awhile) and made him controlable.

Yeah it's convoluted as hell but still made for a good read.

9/9/99 was also the launch date of the Sega Dreamcast.
