i picked it up. read through it quickly, and i am pretty hopeful for the series. the story didn't knock my socks off, but it sets the table for a good ongoing series. the setting is "500 years after the end of the world". i wonder when that was? 4001? 4005? 5001? i love the mystery. that gets me really excited for the direction that Magnus will be taking..

Whoa, quite a first issue. Spoilers below if you haven't read it yet.
It actually felt more like a #0 issue than the other Dark Key #1's. Samson himself doesn't play a major role until late in the issue, and is one of the least developed characters (so far) that were introduced.
We meet 3 tribes, lots of characters (some which die already) and 19 years pass. Quite an epic beginning squeezed into 22 pages. Really curious where it will go from this solid foundation.
Patrick Oliffe's art is a great fit. Lots of great detail and rough lines that go well with the rough setting. Also really liked the reprint of the original. All in all a great start to the series.

Magnus takes place in 4000, and Samson is before that. I think it's been mentioned before, but it's somwhere between modern times and 4000. 2800 maybe?KenClarkson4Prez wrote:i picked it up. read through it quickly, and i am pretty hopeful for the series. the story didn't knock my socks off, but it sets the table for a good ongoing series. the setting is "500 years after the end of the world". i wonder when that was? 4001? 4005? 5001? i love the mystery. that gets me really excited for the direction that Magnus will be taking..

hmm. ok. i was assuming this was a post-4000 world. isn't it a little far fetched though that the world of 4000 could be built from th ground up in less than 2000 years, when it has taken us 6000 years of civilization to get to where we are now? hmmm, maybe a "teacher" will be introduced in Mighty Samson that will speed up the process?

haven't read this yet, but I did pick it up. The store I went to wanted to charge $7 for the variant cover, so I passed on that. Going to another LCS tomorrow in the hopes of getting the variant there for cover price. Will probably also pick up this Occultist book if it's going to have some kind of tie-in to the Shooter stuff.

I picked up the variant today because of the art. I think I have a copy coming from dcbs so I wasn't going to buy this today, but I flipped it really quickly and was impressed by the art.Ryan wrote: Patrick Oliffe's art is a great fit. This did feel much more like a #0 issue. I like reading a bit of origin in a first issue. This was good for a first issue. I really like both the art and the colors alot.Ryan wrote: It actually felt more like a #0 issue than the other Dark Key #1's. I did feel a bit discombobulated reading this.
I had to read the first few pages twice to remember who was who. To be fair, I regularly have that problem with comics using character names that aren't regular names of today.
****Spoilers ****
The time period thing was weird. I read the "500 years after the end of the world" caption, but the setting, the colors, the language, the haircuts and most everything took my mind back to earlier times. I was a bit jolted when I got to the page with the car and the "camera discount" store sign in the background. Then I looked through the rest of the backgrounds ealier in the book. They are there. Buildings, storefronts and such are all there, just more subtle.
The time period is a bit weird. I can see how things could change that drastically 500+ years in the future. I just don't think everything would go backwards.
***** More spoilers ******
The finger thing was a bit gross. I guess mom must have been "cursed" in some way too because she kept all of her digits and extremeties.

Me too. I paid a little less than that for my Turok and Magnus variants. At this point, i'm happy with just having the new books to read.Brother J wrote:Ah, I'll do without if I can't get it cheap enough.JonesyAZ wrote:Good luck, my friendBrother J wrote:haven't read this yet, but I did pick it up. I haven't read Samson #1 yet, but hope to tonight

The other store didn't have any of the variants, either. eBay had copies, but with shipping, I was better off buying it locally, so I stopped back in to the first store. They then had the Samson variant bagged and priced at $9.99!

I told the guy who was behind the counter that the owner had offered to sell it to me for $7 the day before, so I did get it for the original price. They also had the Occultist variant for $9.99, but had no interest in that.

I really wasn't expecting much because of the concept, but the first ish was fantastic. Great art and a story every bit as quirky, engaging and intriguing as Solar and Magnus. They've turned a concept about a guy who wonders around in ruins in a furry toga into something really great. Hats off to all involved.
Favorite parts:
Samson first showing his strength: best introduction of a super power... ever. LOL
That barbarians are from Jersey.
The judge's son...he's the best political scumbag since Seko in Rai.
Samson kicking lots and lots of barbarian booty as an adult.
That Samson was given a place upwind of the camp (Think about it. They probably don't have sewers...)
And in the Gold Key reprint: Tub-of-Tar Fruit!!!

Love the wily son of a jackal guy. Should make for some very nice twists and turns later on!
