DU superhero universe recommendations?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

I'm also looking for recommendations of universes I could get somewhat cheaply and easily to fill out some of the 2,011 comic reviews I'm planning to do in 2011.

Defiant looks likely since I read them before and really liked them. Leaning towards doing Broadway if I can scare them up.

What is the general impression of Triumphant? Worth trying to run down? Any others that get strong recommendations for readability?

Thanks!

- Matt

I have been able to track down almost the entire run for less than 10 bucks....and I enjoy the stories, too boot!

The variants are pretty cool shwag, with the postcards/trading cards, etc.

Sweet! It's kinda cool how many different universes are getting votes in that. And thanks for the recommendation - if I find a deal on Triumphant I think I'll go for it.

I was not going to get into Triumphant as I thought the art was total crap... then I READ a few issues and then a few issues more and said to myself, "Hey, these are pretty good stories..." Now I have only a few signature books to go until I am at 100% complete on them. AND they were incredibly cheap.

Another cheap universe to get into (IMO) is a few TITLES from various DUs such as Hero Alliance (Innovation) and Justice Machine (Comico). GREAT stories a few crossovers (in Comico). Broadway is a good enough line to go after if you can live without ever seeing a copy of Miracle on Broadway. Another easy and FUN line to go after is Tekno Comics. I love those books.

I have tracked down some deals on eBay in the last few years. I picked up almost the entire Triumphant base set for $3.64 plus shipping one time. I picked up the whole Defiant run (minus Birth of the Defiant Universe and the variants) and over half the Broadway run for $9.99 a few years ago.

If you are diligent and consistent, you really can score some good deals on these forgotten books. Practice massaging the eBay search feature. Cast a wide net, search in the whole comics category (include descriptions!) and try to find very specific code words. Search terms like "Ultraverse" are specific enough that you can search all of eBay and end up with relevant search results.

Fun story - the first time I searched all comics for "Unity", I ran across a lot of 9 comics including a Unity 0 Red with no bids and a starting price of $2.99 and over 2 days left. I won that lot for $8 and some change postage paid. The word red appeared nowhere in the description but it was featured in the photo.

Did you know Triumphant Comics was Adam Pollina's (Chromium Man) & Franchesco's (Scavengers) 1st professional work as a comic artists!

Issues from fall of 1998 onwards are volume 2. Also, if Ghost is #'d at 23 or higher, then it is definitely v.1, as volume 2 only went through 22 issues. If it is written by Warner, Kennedy or both, it's v.2 and if by Luke, then v.1 :thumb:

This came out around the time right after I bought the comic-book store, and we did really well with them for a while! I remember it being pretty good, too. Whatever happened to them, do you know?

Wow. That's fantastic.

OK. I will keep an eye out. I sort of prefer digging through boxes to bidding online, but sounds like you've had pretty great success! And sounds as if I should be able to track some of these down.

That wasn't meant as a knock - I have bought and sold comics online, and continue to do so - I just enjoy the thrill of the hunt a little more when the comic is in my hand, I guess. Or I have a comic-flipping fetish.

A couple of years after Liar closed - Sharon Scott took it to Avatar where they published 2 issues (0 & 1) with a stupid amount of variant covers each and that has been it.

I know what you mean. There aren't many stores over here but it's great when you do get to a shop and rifle through a ton of boxes.

It is more for supply than demand. I love digging through quarter bins but there are two comic book stores in a 200 mile radius from my house and neither has a quarter bin.

I bought the Triumphant stuff. The art was so-so, but the story was good. IIRC Adam Pollina (Defiant - Charlamagne) cut his teeth on The Chromium Man.
