Deathmate - Does Anything Significant Happen?
I'm nearly to Deathmate in my re-reading. I do plan to try it, but is there really any reason to read it if it's horrendous?
I know I didn't like it back in the day.

Well, if you re-read it, you can warn me how bad it's going to be when I get to it in my reading project ... I remember being disappointed in it when it came out years ago, but my tastes have changed since then - I think I'm more tolerant of things that aren't exactly what I'm looking for. But I wouldn't expect much.
I do remember Gen 13 was introduced, if that helps you any

To have bought it and thought you got anything close to your moneys worth is just plain wrong.
Disjointed stories that make little or no sense using somewhere along the way a few of the characters we all love.
People have said the books that were done partly by the Valiant side are ok, but that does not make them good.
The image books were not even better than average in the art department.
The liefeld stuff is truly shocking and can be marked down with minus figures for failing to deliver anything you could ever expect from a comic, a start, middle or end and how about a plot that the issue follows, which is in turn linked to the rest of the series.
So hey if you are reading the whole Valiant universe, at some point this needs to be done, but it is as bad as people say and time will not change this.
I appreciate that a few people like to joke about liking it back in the day, but not one person can offer logical reasoning behind this, what was ok or good about it, what happened etc.
It has to go down as the worst inter company crossover ever and could only be beaten by smarter people trying to do a worse job on purpose.

The Black issue is the first appearance of Gen13—not really a big deal anymore but was fairly significant back when readers actually cared about Fairchild, Grunge, etc.400yrs wrote:I'm nearly to Deathmate in my re-reading. So I've read the first 2 previews. Maybe I should rephrase my initial question....
Do the stories told in Deathmate affect Valiant continuity in any way? If I skipped this, would it make any difference in my re-reading the whole universe?
Archer going after Shadowman in the Orange/Pink preview feels like a story forced just to get characters into the book.

Green has some interest as it shows that Deathmate is a world where Unity never happened.400yrs wrote:So I've read the first 2 previews.
No, it's just that we see what happens to Solar the Explorer from Rai 0, which makes no difference at all.If I skipped this, would it make any difference in my re-reading the whole universe?

That was the onset of blindness caused by looking at too much Liefeld-clone art.jridd28 wrote:Deathmate was soooo incredible that it single handedly caused the comic bubble to burst. Most readers said that it was so good of a story that they were never able to really read anything else. he he he

Other than picking up on one thread from Rai 0, no, the Deathmate stories don't have any relation on Valiant continuity.400yrs wrote:So I've read the first 2 previews. Maybe I should rephrase my initial question....

I chose the word "relation" carefully because even with flushing out the story behind Solar the Explorer it does not have any affect on Valiant continuity. If the curiosity is killing you, you can easily read the Prologue and Epilogue sparing yourself the agony in between.
