DU superhero universe recommendations?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

DU superhero universe recommendations?

Post by leonmallett »

I like my shared world superhero comic books, I really do. I don't like the current Marvel & DC event cycle ad nauseum, but I like shared superhero universes.

So any recomendations of lines from the 1980's or later that I haven't looked at yet - i.e. NOT any of those below)?

Lines I collect already so no real point suggesting them ( :P ):
  • Ultraverse
    Milestone
    CGW
    Justice Machine
    DNAgents
    Malibue Protectors-verse
    !mpact
    Big Bang
    Future Comics

CGW, later Dark Horse Heroes, was excellent, if a bit full of short lived series. I'm not as familiar with the rest. Milestone had some really out there color schemes-a lot like Defiant and early Valiant. Future is pretty easy to grab as they were only around for maybe 7 or 8 issues worth of material. But, of those, CGW is my # 1 choice. Next to Valiant, it was the only 'verse to debut in the 90's that was really grabbed my attention and was solid from top to bottom. X, Ghost, King Tiger, Motor Head, The Machine, The Man from the Vortex, Grace, Law...the list goes on. Oh, and the REAL Barb Wire, which has nothing to do except in name, with the Pam Anderson DISASTER of a movie.

Easy....try CrossGen. Superior quality, currently can be found cheaply and some of it's apparently making a comeback.

Crossgen is outstanding. Good call 181man. Not strictly superheroes the traditional sense but some great ideas.

Also worth checking out New Universe and 2099.

That's what I get for skimming, lol. Anyways...I agree with the Cross Gen suggestions.

I disagree with that statement. Each one of the sigil bearers were a hero to their respective worlds.

Well, there was this other company in the 90's called Valiant...yes, sorry, I'm being a smart @$$. :P

I hear you on the Marvel event stuff. However, I have really enjoyed some of their 'street-level characters' in recent years. Daredevil under Bendis/Brubaker was superb for a long time --- it's a crime the book was only selling 40K copies or so per month.

Brubaker's Cap was excellent early on....not quite as good lately but solid.

And the defunct Iron Fist book was excellent throughout.

I know these aren't independents but how much room is left for 'em after the big two?

Not tried any futurians - what kind of issue count does that have?

I have picked up my first Elementals books today (other than the JM miniseries crossover).

Futurians is a about 5 issue and made up of the characters from Dave Cockrums sketchbook that him and Len Wein didnt choose for Ginat Size X-men # 1.

Elementals is the dogs bollox.
I need two comics to complete everything they have been in.

I enjoy Virgin Comics very much as well as Hero Alliance and Justice Machine. CGW is simply one of the most fun for me. I can't wait to finish getting all the issues of Marvel 2099. The more I get in regards to issues, the sooner I want to get started.

Ghost seems to be my bridge to cross as well. I have a hard time keeping up with which volume I need.
