Comprehensive Malibu Checklist
I am working on a comprehensive Malibu checklist - beyond Ultraverse, Genesis and Bravura.
I am also wanting to include the small, indy companies that Malibu gobbled up before it was in turn gobbled up by Marvel. I have lists compiled so far for Amazing, Adventure, Eternity, Pied Piper and Wonder Color. Up next are Aircel and Malibu itself (at least outside Ultraverse, Bravura and Genesis).
Can anyone add any more companies to that list?
The thing that is slowing me down is that I have hard copies of these lists and have to re-type them into the computer to post them here. There are about 7 pages of these lists, single space 10 point font, so far.

weird one this one, Mile High has a listing for these books under Platinum Editions, and then there's also a listing for Platinum Studios. The connection between the two (at least from looking at the MH page) is the "Hero By Night" comic.Chiclo wrote:I think I found another Malibu imprint, Platinum. Can anyone verify this? Looks like mostly Sergio Aragones stuff.
Abraham Stone GN, HC
Buzz and Bell Space Cadets GN, HC, HC signed & numbered
Smokehouse Five GN
From wikipedia: Platinum Studios was founded in 1997 by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg following his role as founder and head of Malibu Comics.
So connected in some way, but not sure that it really was a Malibu imprint.
EDIT: just read the other thread, so it looks like Mile High might be screwed up again, they have books that should be listed as Platinum Studios under Platinum Editions. So it looks like the Platinum Editions books were from 1991 or so, and ARE a Malibu imprint, while Platinum Studios came later.

Victory Comics was the self-publishing company Reggie Byers started up to originally produce Shuriken. Not sure how he ended up publishing other people's works, but I'm pretty sure this was his company, so not a Malibu imprint.Chiclo wrote:Maybe Victory Comics?
Komodo and the Defiants 1
One Arm Swordsman 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Phase 1 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Shrike 1
Shuriken 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Thus the inclusion in the Malibu apocrypha.Brother J wrote:Victory Comics was the self-publishing company Reggie Byers started up to originally produce Shuriken. Definitely the same company. The publisher symbol is the same. I am just throwing it in anyway.
Glad to see you are looking at this thread, Bro J!

Ok, I thought you were coming to the conclusion that Victory was a Malibu imprint just because Shuriken went from one to the other. I assume the way it worked was that Byers' self publishing company went under like a lot of self publishers did after the great "Black and White Glut" and he simply moved to Malibu so he could continue to do his Shuriken character.Chiclo wrote:Thus the inclusion in the Malibu apocrypha.Brother J wrote:Victory Comics was the self-publishing company Reggie Byers started up to originally produce Shuriken. Not really a checklist item per se but I have been doing some research and found several fascinating tidbits.
Did you know that Aircel started out as an insulation company? The company was based in Canada and lost a contract with the (presumably Canadian) government and started printing comic books. Two guys were at the heart of Aircel, Barry Blair who was the comics guy and Ken Campbell who was the money guy. Malibu bought out the assets of Aircel and Barry Blair moved down to California and was pretty much autonomous within the company. The imprint was more adult-oriented and was phased out when Acme Interactive, a video game company, merged with Malibu and wanted a cleaner image.
Dave Olbrich has a blog he has not updated since January of this year and there is some fascinating stuff on it. I ran across it today and read a lot of the posts.

He has a 4-part Behind the Scenes of Malibu story and the comments are particularly interesting.

I can't take all the credit. At work, I am there for 8 hours a day and work maybe a full 2 hours. I've got a computer and a lightly monitored internet connection. Over the last few weeks, I have been compiling several lists and doing a lot of research about Malibu comics.Draco wrote:Dude, a this time you are kicking so much a** im fast becoming a fan of you ability to dig up the info.Chiclo wrote:Not really a checklist item per se but I have been doing some research and found several fascinating tidbits.

The lists I have been putting together - I have lists compiled for Parody Press, Spoof Comics, Personality Press and Celebrity Comics. Spoof, Personality and Celebrity are related companies. Anyway, I just need to retype them up and post them here.
Random Malibu fact - the first book that Malibu published was Dark Wolf, a 4 issue limited series.

At this point, I think I am using this thread as a semi-formal scratch paper to keep notes about Malibu stuff.
Adventure Publishing (later Adventure Comics) was founded by a man named Steve Milo. Adventure eventually was sold to Malibu and today Steve Milo is a real estate broker in Florida. His website is here - http://vacationrentalpros.com/welcome-to-our-site.html
Here's a fan site to Adventurers, a book published by Adventure. http://www.tawmis.com/adventurers/index.html
