Gold Key/Whitman

Post by darkknight919 »

I came across a stack of Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom books that I thought were Gold Key Issues, however they were published by Whitman.
I know Whitman did some DC books.......Is it the same kinda deal whith these Gold Key issues? The majority of these books are from the early eighties. Are they harder to find? Worthless? Any info would be great.

Gold Key started in the early '60's and Whitman picked up the run later finishing in about 1982. The Gold Key are more valuable. Maybe someone here knows more details.
It's Solar... Don't call him Dr. Phil!

Yeah, these are real "classics." Classic actually meaning they suck. Bad art, Bad story.

I mean, come on......Example: Issue 31

Solar fights THE SENTINEL. A guy who played a superhero on some low budget TV show. Gained super powers because a stage light fell on him.
Tried to get with Solar's girlfriend. Solar kicks his *SQUEE*. End of story.

Garbage.

Gold Key and Whitman were both published by Western Publishing. For some reason, Western decided to get rid of the Gold Key name and use the same name that published their books. At least that's what I've heard.

Western also was the one that produced the books for Dell. When Dell decided to vacate, Western decided to pick up all the licenses themselves.

The history gets really complicated if you include Dell... Basically Whitman was for toy stores and similar and Gold Key was the normal comics. Until the relaunch attempt in the 80's, then they only used the Whitman imprint.

Do you mean Frank Bolle's art? I like it. It's friendly. Reminds me of childhood days. But it is more suited for other things than superhero comics. Or, his Magnus was good. Something basic about Magnus as a protector shows in his art.

Do I remember Magnus wearing pants in the Dr. Solar back-up stories? Were there Mini-hateahs back then too?

While it's not exactly the same subject... Dell's "Brain Boy" was supposedly
an inspiration for Pete Stancheck.

As far as I can tell, the name "Harbinger" was in early Dr. Solar stories...
but I don't think Valiant's Harbinger and the Dr. Solar "Harbinger" are
related at all... except for the name. An homage, perhaps?

I've got that Solar issued mentioned earlier. What a goofy story and waste of his powers. But I guess that could apply to a lot of the Valiant issues, too.
