Valiant Comics Custom Action Figures Picture Thread
Valiant Ones,
I scour the internets far too often for my obsure, crappy interests. I'm guilty of it and I think, if you're reading this, you might be, too. However, the fact that I never can find enough people who are into the same things I am, shall never staunch my search for my lost and unknown brethren!
One of my interests is action figures. I believe it all started in the late 70's with a little picture called Star Wars. I'm not sure if any of you have ever heard of it before? Well, that started a new generation collecting lil plastic people on a mass scale. Sorta like what GI Joe did in the 60's for boys with GI Joe. And then in the early 80's GI Joe came back and that was it. I was hooked for life.
Now, many people are into collecting figures and the internet has allowed them to meet and greet! And then a funnier thing happened... people started customizing, painting, sculpting, molding to make their favorite characters in multiple scales and sizes!
Popular Scales:
25mm - lil lead miniatures (Warhammer sized)
1/18th - Star Wars/GI Joe 3.75 - 4" figures
1/12th - Marvel Legends/DC Universe 6" figures
1/6th - GI Joe/Sideshow/Hot Toys 12" figures
So, these two factors (internet searching/Figure Customizing) combined with a third obsession (Valiant Comics), leads me to create this thread that I hope we'll all use to showcase any and all Valiant Custom Figures! *Special shoutout to loose collector, who has a seperate thread here devoted to his amazing work! Check it out!!!
I'll start us off with a few pics from the web (Translation: NOT MINE)!

I'd go for 1/6 with full articulation & detail like the above link. Of course to a lesser degree and for about $50-75 a pop.

If you're talking about the Dino part, he's referring to Malev.X-O HoboJoe wrote:What the hell did I miss now?ian_house wrote:Awesome find Dino!

I haven't answered the poll, because that would really depend on quality and price. While I would *want* to buy them all to support Valiant products, I'm not going to spend good money on crap. And I can't shell out a ton of money for super duper high quality 12" Sideshow like figures either.
I love action figures, but what I look for in an action figure these days is different than what I looked for when I was 12. I'm not worried about articulation as I don't "play" with them. A good looking figure that can be posed and set on a display shelf without costing an arm and leg is of more interest. I don't know what McFarlane Toys is doing lately, but his figures pretty much hit the nail on the head for me. They look awesome, they are articulated enough so you can pose them, and they look great on a display shelf.

I wouldn't advise articulating them... most of them fell apart.Heath wrote:I haven't answered the poll, because that would really depend on quality and price. Todd does an awesome job with action figures, I would love to see his take on the Valiant characters.Heath wrote:I haven't answered the poll, because that would really depend on quality and price. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Mego Valiant custom, but I hope to make my classic Shadowman soon.

My plan is make one of every character pictured on the cover of Unity #0.

See, I was a kid in the 80s, so I was never really big on the really small size Star Wars or GIJoe style (3 1/4" I think?). Nor was I into that huge cloth and plastic head/arms-whatever 70s look. My sweetspot is the 5"-8" range, where the original He-Man and TMNT landed. Factor in the ThunderCats (which were actually slightly bigger, iirc) and you have the holy triumvirate of 80s action figures. Heck, even Transformers G1s weren't much bigger than that, maybe 8"-9" for most, and 10.5"/11" for the bigger ones.
Fast forward to the early 90s and you had the Spawn line come out from Todd Toys (which was of course quickly renamed McFarlane Toys), which just completely took over the action figure design title; they were the same size basically. Then the big hitters of the past years ended up in that same 6"-8" range, DC Selects/Marvel Legends/Simpsons: World of Springfield/etc.
I actually found this site when I was searching for custom figures of Valiant characters, a month or so ago (I think maybe 4-5 weeks really). What a nifty turn of events this thread pops up!

Sanman,
Your Valiant Megos are tremendous! PLEASE tell me what kind of fabric you used for that Magnus "Battle Tunic" (I won't call it a skirt)!! I have been worrying about what type of fabric to use and it appears as if yours has that chain-mail/armored look! Quite inspiring!
Otma,
Well, no matter how you found us, we're glad you're here! We seem to be in the minority here, as far as toy collecting goes, but most of the guys are cool about it. Hey, we all have our interests. The customs I'm working on are mainly 1/6 scale 12" figures and since I am a big fan of Valiant's future universe (Magnus/Rai) that's where I'll start.
I'm glad to see that there are so many talented people here. I am so glad I found this place since Valiant Comics has always been one of my obsessions!
