My comic story
Hi guys,
I've got some time to kill so I'll tell my comic book story instead of just my Valiant story.
Way back in the early 70s I was 5 years old and lived way out in woods. To get to my house you would drive out to the middle of nowhere, turn left and drive some more. For some reason, I know not why, I wasn't allowed to go to kindergarten. Instead of kindergarten I'd spend a few minutes a day several days a week on my mother's knee as she read comics to me. Mostly Thor, Fantastic Four, and the Avengers.
She would read just enough to make me interested then quit. It made me want to learn to read so I could read the comics whenever I wanted. I don't know if this was her intent, but if it was it was successful. By the time 1st grade rolled around I was ahead of most of the other kids when it came to reading.
For the next 7 or 8 years I was a comic fanatic. I read everything from Richie Rich to Batman, but my favorite was the Legion of Superheroes. By the age of 12 or 13 I had decided that I had outgrown comics. I didn't pick up another comic book until I was around 20 or 21.
Around the age of 20 or 21 I had a stressful job and had taken up drinking to cope. It was almost to the point that you could correctly say that I had a problem. Then one day my younger brother asked me to read a set of Batman comics. I can't remember if it was the Cult or the Ten Nights of the Beast. I told him I was a bit too old for comics, but he persisted. I finally relented and was hooked again. And strangely enough, reading the comics took my mind off of work. I replaced alcohol with comic books.
The nearest comic shop was 45 miles away, but I became a fixture there almost every Friday after work. After Valiant started publishing I started hearing all of the talk about them, but I was already spending a fortune on other comics so I just ignored the Valiant hype. Then I stumbled across a very reasonably priced Harbinger No. 6 in the back issue bins. I loved the art and the coloring and was very intrigued by the story. So I picked up more Valiants. For some reason the stories and characters seemed more "real". At least as "real" as characters with super powers can seem. Now I was hooked on Valiant. By this time most of the pre-Unity books were priced out of my range, but I got what I could.
Fast forward to the end of 1996. I got married. This brought on a new set of bills which slowly ended my comic collecting. I haven't bought a new comic in a long time now, but I still read my collection. Especially when things get tough. And since last year I've been slowly trying to fill the holes in my collection. That's how I stumbled upon this wonderful place.
I apologize for this being so long. I get carried away some times.

Thanks everyone. And just for the record each of the voices in my head have told me that I'm NOT insane and do NOT need a sanitarium.Unblessed wrote:Ah nice. Another inmate for our sanitarium.
Welcome!
Oh wait...I misunderstood. The voices claim that they were saying that they want to take a train and visit the planetarium. My mistake.

Stay away from this one, though:Chuck64 wrote:Thanks everyone. And just for the record each of the voices in my head have told me that I'm NOT insane and do NOT need a sanitarium.Unblessed wrote:Ah nice. Another inmate for our sanitarium.
