New direction for Valiant
Just talking out of my *SQUEE* here ...
How about if when the new Valiant is unleashed, the direction is tremendously different from the old VH1? Sex. Violence. Mature themes, stuff for adults. Graphic.
Look at great comics like Walking Dead (thanks 400, for steering me to that). Look at moments like in Spider-Man recently when the Lizard killed his son. Look at television like the Sopranos or True Blood. And look at all of us, many years older and very different people from when we started reading this stuff.

In fact I think it's a really good idea . . .

Although there is a market for these themes, I hope VEI doenst go this way. Im a fairly conservative guy, and I enjoyed the level of 'maturity' that the old VALIANT books had. Less is better for me. I think it takes a lot more talent to write a consistently good series without delving into sex, drugs, gratuitous graphic violence, ect...
I hope VEI takes the higher road. I want to sit with my kids a read these books without fear of coming across something that needs a lot of explaining.
Too much adult content is what drove me away from buying new comics. I think it was the DC series 52. I had to explain why there were two women with slinky underwear on laying in the same bed to my wife. It wasnt a pretty explanation, so I decided to stop buying.
From a business perspective I would like to see some data in regards to what makes the most money up front, not after market. Another thing to consider is marketing toys, video games, movies, ect... thats a ton of money right there.

It takes talent to write well on any topic. Some writers/artists handle mature themes better than superheroes (Garth Ennis with his Punisher stories, for example); some are the opposite. Whatever they do, I want to see it done well.IanAlexavier wrote:Although there is a market for these themes, I hope VEI doenst go this way. I agree. It would be cool if they did "Marvel Superhero Squad" type Valiant books. Sell them for $2 and every time an old timer like us bought a new VEI Valiant book, we would buy the $2 Valiant Superheroes book for our kids.depluto wrote:Nothing wrong with treading two paths, for sure.Elveen wrote:The only thing with doing that is you are cutting off a big portion of a potential audience. I wonder if VEI are thinking of doing a separate set of books aimed at kids/pre-teen/teenagers?
It's a win win.

I think this was done tastefully.. it wasnt about her big breasts and nipples, in a sexual situaion INTENDED to arouse men.. it was more about character with her. Guys, you do understand that sex sells and that VALIANT didnt use sex as a selling feature, as far as I can remember, while most other companies have.ian_house wrote:But Mother God's transparent attire was cool with you?IanAlexavier wrote: Too much adult content is what drove me away from buying new comics. I really dont have a HUGE issue with nudity when it is done tastefully, although with that being said, underage exposure to sexual themes can have devastating effects. Most porn addicts were exposed to graphic sexual themes before age 13.

I don't mind what content is in a book as long as there is a solid reason for it to be there as part of a character/story/plot. If it is there merely for shock value or to "sell" a book, then I have an issue with it. That doesn't cover just sex, but anything. Deaths, weddings, births, you name it. If it is there artificially, I won't like it. If it is handled poorly, I'll be doubly *SQUEE*.
