Despite my deep affection for Solar #0 - 10 at Valiant, Magnus was always my favorite character. I found myself smiling on the way to the comic shop, with a real sense of anticipation, and I wasn't disappointed.
I've waited a long time to read new Magnus stories by Jim Shooter. I also have enjoyed Bill Reinhold's work on The Badger and Punisher, so it'll be good to see how the two of these creators really get in synch as the series progresses.
What's really interesting to me is that even the great Russ Manning clearly got better. His original Magnus #1 story was quite enjoyable, but it's no match for his later stuff (even just a few issues later).
My LCS had more copies of this than Solar. Again I'm sure my constant raving had nothing to do with that.
I did get a few extra copies of the regular cover through my account, so if anyone can't get one, we can talk. Got the variant, too, but only one copy.
Love the paper stock.
And seriously, after how long we've all waited, if it's possible, just enjoy the fact that we can even have this discussion and have it not be theoretical... it's been a long time, hasn't it?

I completely agree. I really enjoyed this issue and really enjoyed the Solar issue. I am so happy to see that some of my favorite characters are back.JCVaughn wrote:Love the paper stock.

Also, I really love the paper stock. it really makes the colors stand out. I wish that Valiant would have done all of their books on good paper stock, instead of just a few titles.

I picked up a copy of each cover today along with the latest Glamourpuss, glad I stopped in because it was the last two copies they had of Magnus and the last copy of Glamourpuss. Is one cover on the Magnus #1 supposed to be more rare than the other? If I only could have bought one, I would have went with the Swanland cover, just a gorgeous painting.

The Reinhold cover is the variant and more rare (rarer?). Not sure what the ratio is.Brother J wrote:I picked up a copy of each cover today along with the latest Glamourpuss, glad I stopped in because it was the last two copies they had of Magnus and the last copy of Glamourpuss. I think it's a 1 in 5 ratio.Ryan wrote:The Reinhold cover is the variant and more rare (rarer?). LOVED IT
I just read Magnus One... and I thought it was INCREDIBLE. At the end I felt like I could have kept reading another dozen issues. If this stays Shooter/Reinhold I'm on board for sure, hopefully they build a strong enough base that whoever takes over after them has a great foothold too.
It feels new, but it also feels like it's right back in the great pre-Unity Valiants. I really don't understand those who dislike the art... if I were to try to capture the essence of the Gold Key Magnus and the best of Valiant Magnus... this is pretty much exactly what it would look like. The writing and plot and some hints of what's to come were great too.
I have to say I really did not care for Solar... and not just the art. I thought the writing and story were very poor as well. I'm giving it another issue or two but I just can't imagine liking it unless there's a radical shift. Loved the cover of Solar #1 though. I am not a huge Solar fan though, I really only like Alpha & Omega, not the Goldkey or post-unity Solar.
I was never a huge Turok fan, but this Magnus has me giving it a real chance too. If Solar can get turned around... NICE THING GOING ON HERE!
Really it kind of flabbergasts me that anyone who would be on a board like this talking about the "glory days of Valiant" wouldn't just be going ballistic over this first issue of Magnus. The Free Comic Book day teaser really didn't even do it justice.

That's a nice bonus from TFAW.raymondsolar wrote:All I can tell you is that when I place my order with TFAW for each Gold Key Heroes book, I order and receive an equal amount of regular and variant copies, all at the same pre order price of $2.80.StarBrand wrote:I think it's a 1 in 5 ratio.Ryan wrote:The Reinhold cover is the variant and more rare (rarer?). Just finished reading it and liked it much more than Solar. Good story and solid art and one of my favorite characters written by one of the best. What more could I ask for?
I liked the homage to Tesla with the giant Tesla coils. Very cool.

I just read Magnus #1.
As disappointed as I was with Doctor Solar #1, I really, really enjoyed Magnus #1 a whole lot more than I expected to.
I really liked the art alot and I'm pretty sure it will get better each issue. The coloring is great. If I have any gripes (and they are very minor) it's that Magnus is a bit too buff and the black robs are a bit tough to see clearly in the action scenes.
The story was a 100% improvement over Solar. It started with some quick action, introduced a love interest, villains, character interaction and ended on a cliff hanger. What I really liked was the interaction with 1-A. Where Solar #1 had cheesy, campy dialogue, this book had none, but had good character interaction instead.
I guess all the books are going to stick to the mainly 5-6 panels per page with all the action occuring only inside of rectangle/square panels. This gives the books a dated feel compared to most books out there right now, but I guess that's the way Shooter writes his scripts and wants the books. I like this artist alot even though this is the first work I've seen from him.
4/5
