Was it noise contamination from SDCC?Er, that was an "imagining" of the comment.
Where ever it is, this Hobo missed it completely.

The more I think about Doc Solar 1, the more I think the writing was very technical. All the pieces are there to make the story work on a technical level. Characters are introduced properly, and the conflict is established, and makes sense given the introduction of the characters.400yrs wrote:I agree with the GoldenStateBear regarding the "clunkiness" in Shooter's writing at times. It's either that he's too smart for the artist he's working with or he just doesn't write great scripts for the artist. Not sure.
The characterization, and "flare" (so to speak) seems added on and layered on top of the technical creation. The artistry doesn't hide the technical creation.

Have you found that it gets better with subsequent reads? That has been my experience, so farDr. Solar wrote:The more I think about Doc Solar 1, the more I think the writing was very technical. Nah, backtrackbear. For Doc Solar #1, I think clunky still fits better. That book just wasn't good as a single issue. I'm surprisd Capt Ketchup liked it so much.Dr. Solar wrote:The more I think about Doc Solar 1, the more I think the writing was very technical. My point is that the reason that it seems "clunky" is that it is very technical, or maybe utilitarian is the right word. It serves the purpose of introducing the characters, origin, and conflict, but doesn't flow well.400yrs wrote:Nah, backtrackbear. For Doc Solar #1, I think clunky still fits better. I'm just trying to figure out what exactly it is about it that makes it feel clunky. I'm trying to be digdeeperbear.

Sounds like a care bear one might find in a porn shop.Dr. Solar wrote: I'm just trying to figure out what exactly it is about it that makes it feel clunky. I'm trying to be digdeeperbear.
I wonder if the art that came in didn't really match the script. I get the feeling that the artist didn't really "get it" from reading the book. Maybe he had to adjust the word balloons to match the art. Regardless, the storytelling in the art didn't help.
It's weird, because Magnus #1 flows nearly perfectly to me. There was only one spot where I would've rather started on a new page, but other than that, I had no issues.
It definitely does all that. No reason it shouldn't flow well though. I really think it has something to do with the art / lack of storytelling in the art.Dr. Solar wrote: My point is that the reason that it seems "clunky" is that it is very technical, or maybe utilitarian is the right word. By episode 6, one thing I have noticed - 1) AverageJoeCollector calls himself "Zeph" in the early podcasts, although he vehemently denied that was his name every time someone called him that here, and 2) he pronounces the word "second" as "secont" quite noticeably.
Otherwise, I like them so far!!! A lot of stuff I already knew, but every episode seems to have a new learning experience in it somewhere. And, the off-topic ramblings are great, I hope they don't change in the next 32+ episodes I have to catch up on!!!

What is interesting about this phenomenon is that I find myself looking forward to the off-topic ramblings as much if not more than the Valiant/Dark Horse-related content.Chiclo wrote:The off-topic ramble is an art we practice every podcast. Like any art, you have to experiment a little bit to figure out what the right ratio is before you figure out how to apply it properly. I think we are still experimenting and trying to establish just how much off-topic rambling works.
It's like the experience of buying a video game and realizing after beating the final boss that you have 25 bonus levels to unlock and play through.

So, you are saying that we are like the second quest in Zelda?JonesyAZ wrote:What is interesting about this phenomenon is that I find myself looking forward to the off-topic ramblings as much if not more than the Valiant/Dark Horse-related content.Chiclo wrote:The off-topic ramble is an art we practice every podcast. listened to the first 35 minutes or so, will finish tomorrow. Man, I feel bad for Mr. CGC Purple Label about the 2-D Eclipse books. Those books are extremely rare like he mentioned and considering the amount of money spent on them, it's ridiculous for New Dimension to have packed the books that way. I always look on the inside of any Eclipse 3-D comic in the off chance it might be a 2-D, had no idea they were signed or something like that.
As far as eBay, everyone should definitely make sure they are happy with any purchase, no matter how small the amount of money is that we're talking. If the seller doesn't make it right, neg their *SQUEE* and take any actions that might be open to get your money back.

I didn't realize how much I enjoyed the off-topic rambles until Sean started making more of an effort to bring them back, and now occasionally, he's like, we're pretty far off-topic, and I'm thinking "Let him finish!" because my interest has been piqued.
I listened to the greatest, most eagerly awaited episode yesterday-you guessed it-The Deathmate episode!
