Seriously, to read I would get every trade that Valiant put out there. It will be easier, cheaper and faster than getting all of the individual books, but I recommend getting the books as well. The great thing about the trades is the fact that you don't feel bad about re-reading them, which you will want to do, more than likely.

I like Magnus pretty much through "Quest for the Geomancer". After that, the title no longer exists for me.

Harbinger is ace up to 25. The earliest issues can be pretty damn expensive but there is also an older trade that goes on eBay for pittence and will fill in those first few issues for you, the rest after that can be picked up pretty cheaply.

Pre-unity is the cream of the crop but there is also some good later stuff. If you've got a good run of something just crack on and read that and then come back to it when you have other stuff that fits around it. Having everything makes Valiant much more fun but by no means do you need to own every issue of everything for it to make sense.

I went tiny bit hog wild and picked up (eBay and local shop) Harbinger thru till #27.

That is probably the best thing to hear. I hate how some companies weave the stories thru other books that you wouldn't normally buy. I like stand alone stuff. But from what I have read on the boards, and now listening to the Only the Valiant podcasts....Valiant does an excellent job of weaving the story and keeping books intact.

If you are buying issues between Unity and Chaos effect, and even a bit later, you are going to do much better buying on the boards than eBay. I pretty much give away these common issues for the cost of shipping + $0.10-$0.50 / book.

What did you end up paying on eBay? The fees for sellers have really tuned down eBay's usefulness for low-cost items.

Yea the rest of my acquirement will be thru the boards. I paid under $50 with shipping for the Harbinger lot. All the books have the coupons as well. I have a small budget in mind for myself to put books together, plus I am going to reach out to some friends who collect and see what I can trade with them for. One of my friends has a lot of holes in his Spawn collection, and that is the one book I picked up 2 of all of them.

I was nervous when I first read the $50...but Since the books all had coupons I'd call that a nice score. Depending on condition your Harby 1 with coupon could be worth that by itself.

Not to mention the convenience of having all of them. Nice!

There is a re-reading section too, if you want to share your thoughts on the books as you read them.

It would be cool to hear what you think about them reading them for the first time!

Ignore that part about binding. Its really best.

Though there is a thread somewhere here about those of us crazy enough to go after the elusive "unbound" books that i highly recommend.

It is so you don't lose the books when reading them....
Kinda like packing an extra sandwich in case you get hungry while you are eating.

I am working up an Excel spread sheet for what I have and what I don't have. The good news it that I am sure I am not the first person or the last to do this.

Ian, I'd be willing to give it a shot, and even send them in myself. I think I'd start with walking dead and invincible. So, if you could send me raw copies of the first 25 of both, we'll see how it goes.

I am already biased against the trend of making stories of 3- and 6-issue arcs, just to fit into a TPB. A lot of the times, a 4-issue story is dragged out into 6 issues just to fit this mold. That, and I don't mind reading comics as comics - it's how I bought my first ones and remained that way for 20+ years. Taking comics I already have and turning them into a trade just doesn't make sense to me.

I'd be interested in checking out one of your bound editions, sir.

I think it's a cool idea, but I'm too cheap to ever do it I think. I'm pretty much against anything that costs me money.

That's why I collect Valiants and hang out on the board.
