Jersen - The Guy Who Likes Deathmate

Post by Jersen »

Been visiting this site and the forum for the past several months, and while I have some downtime I thought it would be fun to start joining in the conversations and starting a few of my own.

My very first exposure to Valiant Comics was a 1st issue of a Super Mario Bros. comic I bought when I was in 3rd grade (1990). I was just beginning to get into comic collecting as a hobby, and my best friend and his Mom took me to the nearest comic store, about 30 min. away from where we lived. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a store JUST FOR COMIC BOOKS, I was picking them up from the racks at the grocery store.

I was much more interested in what was going on in the Marvel Universe (the X-World especially) and actually didn't pay attention to Valiant Comics again until I got exposed to their characters with Deathmate. I had read about some of the Valiant characters and what was going on with some of the books in issues of Wizard that I managed to pick up along the way, but Deathmate was the first time I got actual exposure to these characters through the stories. I, of course, came to Deathmate by way of Image Comics, of which I was a huge fan, but the Valiant characters seemed so interesting that I decided I was going to start getting into Valiant books.

My problem, though, was that I didn't like to just pick up a series and start reading. In my mind I needed to find a good breaking-in point so that I wouldn't feel as if I were coming into the middle of something that I couldn't understand what was going on. The best places to do that are with #1 issues and big event stories, so I got in on Secret Weapons #1, which tied into Solar, I picked up every #0 issue I could, and every 1-shot issue, like Eternal Warrior Yearbook. I picked up Dr. Mirage when I came out, and managed somehow along the way to get a copy of the Alpha & Omega TPB and the 4-volume Unity collection.

As the mid-90s approached, I decided that comics were becoming too much of a hassle and not worth the money I had to pay for gimmicky covers and so forth, and my hobby switched from comic collecting to music collecting when I was in Jr. High (ending my Valiant collecting with the conclusion of The Chaos Effect).

In 2008, I came across an ad for a new comic store in a nearby city, visited it to see what was going on with comics and maybe pick up a few things, and ended up becoming completely reeled back into the world of comic books. In summer 2009 I ended up doing some eBay searches for some Valiant books that I was looking to complete stories/runs on, and saw that complete/near complete runs on books were extremely affordable, and started gobbling them up. I even picked up those Deathmate issues that came with the Previews catalogs back in the day!

Actually being able to find and afford the pre-Unity books was SO EXCITING and reading them has been even better! And now that Jim Shooter is relaunching Magnus, Solar, and Turok again at Dark Horse, this is a good time to dive into their former home in the Valiant Universe!

Many paths lead to greatness.

It is statistically inevitable that for some, the first exposure to Valiant is Deathmate.

**SPOILER**

Deathmate was pretty good up until Gayle died. All downhill from there.

Deathmate got you into it? Weird. If deathmate was my first exposure to Valiant, i would have stayed far far away.

Welcome though!
