Unfortunately I was preoccupied with Iron Mania and commissioned drawings most of the weekend...
The Iron Man Prop Auction was awesome, and I'd say that it was a blistering success. Even the small items sold for big bucks, and let's just say that I'm very pleased with the two lots I won - they are both relevent and definitive pieces as opposed to some of the random actuators and nearly unidentifiable "armor" components that were listend.

Here’s what the awesome Prop Display looked like at C2E2 over the weekend!Eternalwarrior68 wrote:post some pics!

I’m really happy to have the auction lots that I won at this show! They were two of the three or four things that I targeted to buy while there.
The first is the Ten Rings Flag. I wanted this piece because of it’s tight ties to the Iron Man mythos with the links to the Mandarin, as well as it’s increased relevance as we near the third movie which will presumably finally show that conflict! The Ten Rings flag was the first piece of foreshadowing in Iron Man that the Mandarin was manipulating events behind the scenes throughout the movies! This is a piece whose relevance will be seen by casual movie goers with the upcoming flicks, and is highly recognizable by comic fans, so I was really happy to add this to my collection!

The 2nd piece was one of the awesome newspaper repros made for the end of the first movie! I thought this would be a great piece because of the memorable image used on the newspaper, which was later changed for the DVD release of the movie (using CG). This is the USA Today version scattered on the desks in the background during the shot Tony is holding The Chronicle in the end of the flick! Also, the paper is framed already and ready for display, and actually comes with a piece of the Mark I armor! What an awesome combo to land a prop with obvious screen significance, combined with an actual armor component!

Thanks guys... I also just got an email from Alec, the President of Propworks. They will be using the photos I took on their company site blog when reviewing the event!
Pretty cool stuff!

I don't think it was a perfect show by any means, but this seems a bit extreme to me. And to say that you'd abandon the show completely is even more extreme.daydreamscomics wrote:C2E2 was the worse convention I've ever set up at. Bad location, bad time of year, everything was overpriced, too many high profile creators, bad loading/unloading set up...no way will I ever go again.
Trust me, I'm not the only dealer with this mentality...
Actually, the only valid criticism I saw here was that maybe there was bad loading and unloading for display setups. I wouldn't know anything about that. Annnndddd, maybe they should stretch the show to a deeper Spring period. Chicago whether vacillates between awesome and pretty chilly this time of the year, so it might be better to settle the show into a few later, warmer weeks. The rest of your comments? No way, man. I've got several criticisms of this show's inaugarual year, but they are way move valid than this!

If you aren't setting up as a retailer, risking your time and money, you have no idea whether or not my points are valid. Attending as a fanboy is a completely different mentality than attending as a retailer.IMJ wrote:I don't think it was a perfect show by any means, but this seems a bit extreme to me. - It's the most expensive show I've ever set up at. My costs were much higher than any WW Chicago show I've ever done, in terms of booth space, parking, hotels, food, etc.
- Loading in and out IS A COMPLETE JOKE. Not only was I forced to waste $40 going through a marshalling field to get a piece of paper NO ONE EVER LOOKED AT, the whole "Lend-A-Hand" program is a joke. We didn't get any help unloading out vehicle when we got there. The only work done by anyone to help us was us loading up four pallets with all of our stuff and someone with a forklift taking it to our car. We sat in a line for 1 1/2 hours just to get into the building to load up. Any other show we've ever done, we can pack up and be out within an hour. I know dealers that waited in line for OVER TWO HOURS JUST TO GET IN THE BUILDING, that doesn't even include load up time
- All the high profile creators are great, except that customers are spending their money in Artist's Alley getting sketches, commisions, autos and whatever else, not with retailers. My sales were 40-50% LOWER than every WW Chicago show I've ever done.
- The venue itself was nice, the location not so much. I heard complaint after complaint about having to drive downtown and how parking was too expensive. When I'm having to pay $19 a day to park at the venue plus $40+ a day per car at our hotel, it's a huge waste of money
- This wasn't just a retailer problem. Top Cow lost enough money that they could have spent launching a mini series (direct quote from a trusted Top Cow employee I am friends with).
Why would any of the above reasons make me want to come back? I wasted four days of my life and in the end, didn't make any money. I basically gave away $3500 worth of merchandise. Making a profit is kind of the point of setting up at a convention wouldn't you think? When I can do the same amount in sales at a show like Planet Comicon in KC or Spring Con in MN for 1/2 - 2/3 less in costs, why would anyone want to waste time and money going to "the con Chicago deserves"?
This show was a *SQUEE* joke. Again, as a fanboy you aren't looking at things the same way, so you're entitled to your opinion. But put yourself in any retailer's shoes, you'd change your tune.

Now that this was developed a bit more, yeah I see your points. Well.... raise them to the C2E2 guys, as I'm sure they are going to continue improving the show over the years.daydreamscomics wrote: If you aren't setting up as a retailer, risking your time and money, you have no idea whether or not my points are valid. And yes, Chicago is expensive. Thank God I had a free press pass because I paid 60 bucks in parking over the course of the weekend... lmao! Another point of improvement would be to add a lunch shuttle or something. McCormick Place is on the outskirts of Lake Shore Dr., so it's not exactly easy to hit all of the awesome Chicago restaurants in the heart of downtown.
