I'm guessing you mean Resident Evil 5 for the unlockables? You unlock the ability to buy infinite ammo, play on a harder level (that if you beat you can unlock an even harder level) and then if you can beat it in under 5 hours... infinite rockets for the rocket launcher. That's just freaking awesome.Knightt wrote: AH, now that I have beaten the game, I have unlocked some stuff ?
Do you remember what would not be unlocked ?
I repurchased Gears of War a while back (before GW2 shipped to get me back in the swing of things for the game, kinda of like 'practice') and I only got through three levels because it was just not 'new' to me. I would REALLY like to go back through and find all the Cogs (dogtags)... it is that 'never leave a fallen comrade behind' thing in me, making me want to complete that.
On GoW 1, I ALMOST got all of the cog tags... I missed one of them and now I don't know which one it was. So that sucked. For me, the thing that makes both of the Gears replayable is that it has an awesome storyline and I always play on co-op with a friend of mine. So we're BSing and just enjoying the game. With 2 there was a little more incentive with the kill 100,000 grubs achievement. I'll probably never make it, but I sure enjoy trying. Beating them on Insane feels like a massive accomplishment too... 1 wasn't too hard until the end but after that final boss fight I really felt like I accomplished something.

Breath of Fire is such an underrated series but I find it works better on handhelds (same with a lot of pre-PSX stuff) than it does on a home console.xodacia81 wrote:I have been pricing systems lately. I loved BoF3 for the PSP but was disappointed with it on the PSX. I love the freedom you get with handhelds and the fact that you can sit in the corner and play away without it dominating a room so you can still interact with people around you. Turn-based battle RPGs lend more to this kind of situation as well as you can take time out mid battle and keep up with a conversation and just go back to it intermittently without losing track of either.

Funny you should mention handhelds, as I just traded my DS-which I haven't sat down to really play with in months, despite having taking a trip 6 weeks ago-for store credit. I used the credit to purchase a PS2, which I decided on because my old one had died and I was really itching to play my Final Fantasy games.Drift wrote:Breath of Fire is such an underrated series but I find it works better on handhelds (same with a lot of pre-PSX stuff) than it does on a home console.xodacia81 wrote:I have been pricing systems lately. I do like the turn based games a bit more and the hybrid appearing system in FF13 has me hesitant. Of the "Action" rpgs, I've played several that were good, but none compare in terms of system to FF except for Secret of Mana, on the SNES. This actually gets me to thinking about which battle-systems I've most enjoyed. In fact, I'm going to go start a thread.

The last couple (is it 4 & 5?) were awful. BoF3 was always my favourite. The first two were pretty good although I played them on handhelds.Drift wrote:Breath of Fire is such an underrated series but I find it works better on handhelds (same with a lot of pre-PSX stuff) than it does on a home console.xodacia81 wrote:I have been pricing systems lately. I stopped playing BOF with # 3. I loved the first two, though. I never did play the GBA versions.ian_house wrote:The last couple (is it 4 & 5?) were awful. BoF3 was always my favourite. No, I thought you were referring to GoW2.etos45 wrote:I'm guessing you mean Resident Evil 5 for the unlockables?
Going back through Resident Evil 5 is NEVER going to happen. One thing is ruining that game for me. It is the fact that you cannot move around when aiming down your weapon. That is very annoying and very unusual to have a limitations such as that in a game.
Once I finish it, it will either get traded in or just left to collect dust.

Only played BoF 1 on GBA but never played 2 at all. 4 was bland but never had the chance to play Dragon Quarter though it looked quite cool and the premise was superb.xodacia81 wrote:I stopped playing BOF with # 3. BOF 2 is superb. It's a very difficult game at times, but that's part of the charm. Once you get your characters "in shape", the game takes off.Drift wrote:Only played BoF 1 on GBA but never played 2 at all. 4 was bland but never had the chance to play Dragon Quarter though it looked quite cool and the premise was superb.xodacia81 wrote:I stopped playing BOF with # 3. The no run and gun of RE5 is somewhat annoying at first, but I got over it pretty quickly. Again, for me, it's the kind of game that is great as a co-op game. I really enjoy running through it with friends and earning points to unlock new infinite ammo gives you some form of reward.Knightt wrote:No, I thought you were referring to GoW2.etos45 wrote:I'm guessing you mean Resident Evil 5 for the unlockables?

GoW2 is only replayable for building up your kills and the great story. I just enjoy the kind of games where I still feel accomplishment even after I've gotten the achievements. Examples are RE5, GoW2 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. All of them are coincidentally co-ops so I can just play with friends, goofing off.

I think the reason was that even then, the designers were aware of how limited the technology was, because computers were starting to advance beyond consoles, after a brief period where consoles had been better than home computers (85 or thereabouts). The designers in the NES/Megadrive and Snes/Genesis days realized the limits of what they were working with, so instead of going for just eye-popping visuals, they concentrated on developing stories and gameplay with re-play factor. It's how you ended up with games like Tetris, Mario World, Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, Streets of Rage, Act Raiser, Shining Force, Phantasy Star, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Megaman, Metroid and many many more.superman-prime wrote:ya there was like 1/3 of all teh titles rocked

Been playing Links Crossbow Training. AWESOME game. Great graphics, very imaginative, and lots to find and uncover in each stage. I got 4 platinums and 5 golds so I'm pretty happy with that.
Just began playing SNK Arcade Classics (picked it up for $10 at Gamespot). Lots of unlockable extra in there to encourage play and replay. I started with the early Neo Geo games (which I remember) and I'm working my way up. Most of the 1990-92 games are so difficult, even on easy, that it detracts from the enjoyment.
The two exceptions I've found so far are Sengoku, a wonderfully imaginative beat-em up that mixes eastern mythology and a post-apocolyptic world and Wolrd Heroes, which is a fun, well balanced fighter (at least in the play through I did as Hanzo). And Magician Lord's graphics and sound are still charming even if I die cheaply every other minute.
I'm waiting to play Metal Slug and Samurai Showdown in the collection, which I loved in the arcade.
