ULTRAVERSE....Ready To Collect!!!!

Post by JonesyAZ »

So...

I've already spoken w/ Knightt about this, BUT...I may decide to start collecting a reading set of common books for Ultraverse...but I am just not sure yet...lol.

If anything, i'd be interested in reading some of the earlier issues of the books to whet my appetite. At the same time, I made a promise to myself that i'd stop buying books after I completed my Valiant set for awhile...lol.

Ah, once the bug bites...

Any advice y'all can give for an Ultra-newb?

Like tictuck said, most of us Ultraverse perve... collectors will donate the common issues, which take up over half the run, for the cost of shipping.

What made you choose Ultraverse? You are not interested in Shooter's other comics like Defiant and Broadway?

I have a complete Defiant reading set (LOVE it!), but am honestly not interested in Broadway :)

Ultraverse because I had a few of the black cover issues back in the day; the first issue of "The All-New Exiles" w/ Juggernaut in the team, I believe :)

Perve...lol. Nice!!!

That sounds great, Chiclo! I've already PM'ed tictuck; not sure what books shall be sent...

I think i'm mostly interested in the earlier parts of the runs at first ("the runs"...lol).

On a completely un-related note...

I found a copy of Sergio Aragones' "The Mighty Magnor" issue 1 at my used book store today for $0.50. As I was half typing this, I opened it up and realized it has a pop-up cover! Just unvealed it...damn, this is cool! Lol...

I have such a new level of respect for Senor Aragones after seeing him at SDCC last year in the "Quick Draw" panel. Awesome stuff :)

The whole thing about Ultraverse fans being perverts, you see.

Ultraverse is pretty cool. It has as much going for it as against it. Have you seen one of those hologram covers in person? They are awesome and most of them are cheap.

I have not seen one of those covers in person, but i'm a SUCKER for hologram books, so I know i'd love to get some at some point :)

I remember Ultraverse being very gimmicky, which makes it kind of exciting to want to collect it. But i've never really heard much about how good the stories are/aren't...lol.

I find it interesting that i'm so into these dead universii that existed around the 1990's. Granted, it makes sense since I experienced my teen years in that decade...

My collecting friends give me so much crud about it though...hahahaha. I shall convert them though...I already got one friend starting to get into Valiant...bwa-ha-ha-haaaa!!!!

Don't expect Shakespeare or the Watchmen when reading the Ultraverse.

Now that we have that out of the way, Ultraverse is very fun. For the greatest part, Ultraverse is a fun but silly read. They didn't knock themselves out coming up with the names of the characters. The comics themselves represent what people think of when they think of comics - fairly self contained (except for the last page or two) and a light-hearted, fun read. There is quite a bit of continuity within the Ultraverse, so the more you read the more you get out of it but you can still get a full entertainmo out of most single issues.

Since I am mostly interested in the Ultraverse output before Marvel's acquisition, is there a list of the dividing line between pre-Marvel and post-Marvel books?

Thanks again, guys :)

I want to say the M logo changes shape around the time Marvel acquried them.

One way to do it would be to collect up to Black October, the reboot that divides UH1 and UH2, but that would go about a year after Marvel bought them out and UH2 only makes up about 20% of the print run.

I want to say that Marvel bought them out around Strangers/Prime/Hard Case 14. The way the Ultraverse titles were released, Strangers, Prime and Hard Case were the first books released and they were all released the same month. The next month saw two additions - I want to say Mantra and Exiles off the top of my head - and the next month saw two more books added to the line and so on. Break Thru is a good indicator of when books were released relative to one another, like Unity is for the Valiant books.

Thanks everyone for the info on Ultraverse:)

Due to finances (though I realize these books are cheap anyway...lol), I have decided to forego collecting Ultraverse at this point in time. I'm also backing out due to promising to stop buying comics after I finished my reading set of Valiant books for awhile. Also, because I am the type of person that must "have it all" when I dig something.

Maybe in a few months i'll revisit this universe.

Thank you to those who have PM'ed me and made offers. Y'all are amazing (as usual!)

Great mini series too.

I've seen the "Quick Draw" panels on video and those are hilarious.

I love some of the Ultraverse ads that Marvel ran in their other books. I am reading Generation X at the moment and there are ads for titles with limited runs of just 40000 copies.

I've got two or three CES variants.

Not something that falls into the super rare category. Maybe worth an entire dollar.
