DC Comics - Need some suggestions for readers

Post by tmcneil82 »

So, I have not read really anything of DC, and would like to know if there were any good story arcs that are must reads. The only things I have read are pretty much Bats books. Long halloween, Dark Knight Returns, Hush storyarc, Killing Joke.

What other storylines are absolute must reads??

Oh, whoops. I meant more in the superhero universe, didn't realize i didn't post that. I'm about halfway through Preacher atm, have read Watchmen, and have all of Sandman lined up. I did forget about V for Vendetta. Any good Green Lantern, Flash, Superman stuff?

If you haven't read Batman Year One, that's a must read. It might be my favorite Bats along with DKR.

Green Lantern - I've read Emerald Dawn and enjoyed it. I'd also recommend Rebirth.

Superman - Pick up the Action issues that were written by Johns and Donner. They shouldn't be too hard to find. I usually hate Superman, but I loved these books (there's probably a trade).

Not really super hero, but it's super hero related..... I'm enjoying the heack out of Gotham Central 1-10. It's noir stuff that gently touches the DC super heros.

Flash - I'm not sure if there's an arc or a trade that I'd recommend..... maybe someone else can point some out, but both the Waid and the Johns runs of the series that started in the 80s was really good.

I should have realized you meant DCU . . . 400 makes good suggestions. You might add Crisis on Infinite Earths as an enjoyable read, Batman: 10 Nights of the Beast and the Wolfman/Perez Titans stuff.

Kingdom Come, especially as a lot of stuff has been incorporated into the DCU in recent years (LoSH Starman in the present day; Red Robin; Magog; various JSA characters etc).

Now onto a should-read as opposed to a must-read: Starman (available as cool Omnibus hardcovers), simply great writing.

Did you sneak 5 indy books in there on the end?? I am finally caught up on Invincible, have some of the Dynamos ready to read, have some tpbs of Hellboy ready to go, and now have a sweet long list to take with me to the store.

So far i think I'm going to get some of the bats storylines that were suggested (as he is hands down my favorite DCU character), and pick up some GL books. I know very little about only two characters in the DCU, Bats and Supes, and almost nothing about the rest. So I'm really looking forward to picking up some books that I can read and not know what to expect.

Really all i know about most of the DC characters is what you overhear at comic stores, and what you can infer from covers, so this should be interesting!

The Archie Goodwin, Walter Simonson version of Manhunter should be mandatory.

Ronin.

First couple years of New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.

The Batbooks are extremely strong right now.

Greg Rucka's run on Detective Comics has been fantastic. Batwoman is turning into a great character and JH Williams has produced the defining work of his career with some amazing pages (Jock's illustrating the current arc, and he's always amazing).

Grant Morrison's Batman and Robin is a frenetic joy to read but the big surprise, for me, is Batgirl. Stephanie Brown struggling with being a superhero and being at shcool and stuff, It has a Spiderman-esque feel and is good, solid, comics.

Historically, check Kirby's Mister Miracle. It'll blow your mind.

Any of the Elsworld stuff-which IS DCU, now-is good. Speeding Bullets, Superman the Dark Ages, Gotham by Gaslight. Batman-Dark Joker: The Wild and, of course Batman: Blood Rain and its two sequels. There was also one where, I think, Bruce Wayne or Kal El found a GL ring.

I've been meaning to check it out again for the later part of the Garth Ennis/Mccrea run. :hm:

I remember Lobo was in a few of the big story arcs though. Alan Grant (Demon & Lobo writer) also used the Demon in the regular Lobo series. He started the "Lobo" monthly right after he finished his "Demon" run so that's probably why he used the Lobo cameos so much.

I always dug those "Demon" covers:
