So is today's market similiar to the 90's market or is the hobby substained by individual collectors? And how does cgc fit into all of this?

Thanks! I don't remember the grade, but I do remember my teacher thought I plagiarized it :x and deducted points because of improper attribution (actually a total lack of attribution)jedimarley wrote:Good read jcdenton.Very insightful.

But, ah, sophmore in high school in '93...
Thanks for making me feel VERY OLD...

BTW, what grade did you get on this paper?

Still, she was right about the attribution part, just not the plagiarism part!

As I stated earlier in this thread:mrknapp33 wrote:Are we in line for another "perfect storm", namely in the CGC market? I just picked up the Feb issue of Wizard- please don't blast me for reading it ocassionally- and I couldn't believe the amount of D Sucking that Wizard does to CGC.
I know that many of you have clearly delineated your positions on CGC and other grading services, but I have a hard time understanding how a NM copy of Harbinger 1 can lose value to $30 while a CGC 9.8 goes for over $900! I realize that CGC is a great way to insure the grade of a book bought over Ebay, but how does this work if you can go to an LCS and cherrypick the best copy? I see this as the bubble that will burst soon. I just hope that it does not shut down the market.
Please don't misconstrue this as a post merely bashing CGC. I recoginze it as a now-established force (5 years) in the collecting world. I am praying that IF it does burst that it does not put another huge hurting on the industry.
"Once population levels of 9.8s start to saturate books that were thought to be rare; prices on 9.8 will start to fall.
Of couse books that are truely rare: Golden, Silver, and Bronze will always be in high demand regardless if CGC'd or not."
For example, if you see a current 'HOT' comic CGC'd at 9.8, it is really not that rare. However, the current market comands a hefty price for any 'Hot' comic CGC'd at 9.8.
Like most things, there is a saturation point (i.e. supply exceeding demand).
Mordern and current comics can be easily found in high grade (9.6 to 9.8). The only best bet for modern and current comics is if it is CGC'd at 9.9/10.0 (now that's rare).
A good example is WOLVERINE'S ORIGIN LS. When it first came out, standard issue 2 at 9.8 could sell for as high as $100 (highest paid auction listed on the Standard Catalog of comics is $109). However, the average market value if ORIGIN 2 at 9.8 is closer to $35.

I think all the above auctions sold cheap compared to when ORIGIN was the 'HOT' (CGC'd) comic.

The 9.8 will not lose it's appeal...GGSAE wrote:Yeah, good examples are high print valiant number ones like Turok#1 with 9.8 grades. These things were made to last, if people make the effort to get them graded the 9.8 will lose it's appeal and won't trade for much.
It's the book that will lose it's appeal.

And, of course, the Spawn Movie #1 variant, which was #65 with a photo cover instead of a drawn cover.greg wrote:Does the 1997 Spawn #1 "Black & White" count?ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:Until #100, that is.riff13 wrote:
Yeah, actually Mcfarlane hated the idea of putting out the same book with multiple covers. Notice that no issues of Spawn ran mutiple covers.
.
