Bob Layton's pre-BWS Solar ...

Post by greg »

Greg,

Here are the model sheets I was looking for last week. (Keep in mind that all of these were done before BWS came onboard and stamped his unique style onto the character.)

The original Solar model sheet was my first stab at a concept drawing, taken primarily from the Gold Key editions of Solar. We quickly decided that it was not what we wanted.
The A&O pencil drawing is 7 ½ x 7 ½ ” and was conceived by Shooter and me to show one of the more dramatic moments from that saga. I can’t remember if this drawing was ever used . (an interesting note: the Gayle figure was modeled by Kat Bolinger—I still have the photo we used of her striking the pose.)
The Solar superhero version is close to the one we finally went with for the character. You can obviously see my Marvel influences showing and the lack of BWS inspiration in this concept drawing. Both Solar model sheets are standard comics page size (10”x15”)

Feel free to post ‘em if you wish.

Thanks,

Bob

I knew that middle image looked familiar:

Its not the exact same image, but its very close. It was used as an ad all throughout the Nintendo comics.

So how did the representation of Solar's power (geometric objects around his hands) come about, Bob? I always thought it was BWS's thing, but it seems that your drawing has it first. Was that all you or did Jim and you come up with it?

Nay--BWS' twinkly stuff was very different and he threw in the plasma lava lamp stuff, as well.
If I remember correctly, Jim wanted a lens flare or something like that.

Hi Valiant art lovers!

Out of the Vault they come!...

I currently own these three pieces of early Valiant artwork featuring Solar. I bought them directly from Bob, so their ownership has been quite exclusive up to now. I'd like to offer these up for bids starting at $100 each.

Due to me putting these up for bids over the weekend, the auction for these will be over when a two day period passes with no new bids.

I'll probably relist this as a new topic later on today because you can't tell these are for sale from the original title of this thread.

This is your chance to own very rare, unpublished pieces of Valiant history! As there is a good possibility that whomever buys these will probably never put them back up for sale again, don't miss your only chance to get them now...

Email or send a PM to me with you bid. Thanks for looking.---Steve
