for those of you who consider getting hired at a comic book shop, be forwarned:
YOUR PULL LIST WILL DOUBLE IN SIZE IN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS
not that it's necessarily bad, but that's a lot of dough at comic prices these days...but on the other hand, i usually have nothing better to do on wednesday nights than read...but then my girlfriend gets mad because i don't pay enough attention to her...where does it end???

I would say it's not economically smart in that you can get those same books out of the bargain bins or at conventions for much cheaper than you are paying right now even with your discount. There is virtually no chance they will accrue in value so that takes the investment angle off the table.
What you're left with is the entertainment value of your money. If you feel that what you are spending each week is worth it for the entertainment you get from reading the comics, and you can afford it, then you are okay. Otherwise, stop wasting all that cash!

Better yet, can't you take them home when you close up and put them back on the shelves when you open up?
When I worked at Macy's when I was in college, I used to wear a $250 pair of Ballys loafers all day and then put them back in the damage inventory section at the end of the day. I'd switch every day like Mr. Rogers.

The SAME pair? Or a new one every day?mrwoogieman wrote:Better yet, can't you take them home when you close up and put them back on the shelves when you open up?

i can do that, but there is two problems with that (or maybe me):Brother J wrote:if you work at a comic shop, is there any reason you can't just read all the books you're interested in and put them back when you're done with them? 50+ books is crazy IMO unless you're getting them for free.
1) i read so many titles, i forget what happens in half of them after i read the next batch, so it's nice to have them handy to re-read anytime i want at home
2) i like having "stuff", be it comics, cd's, or pairs of air jordans. so to actually own said stuff, makes me happy. plus my ultimate goal is to complete all the titles i collect, and start from the beginning and read them straight through.
i am also basically getting 75% of them for free. we get a weekly paycheck, and on top of that 20% of whatever our paycheck is, we get in free store credit (paycheck = $100, $20 free credit). so while the pay isn't great, i'm not really having to pay for all the comics i used to buy. so while it would typically make more sense to buy them 50% at shows, i save money in the long run.
and when i'm working comission off ebay sales, i can get my paychecks in credit, which gives me $8.50 an hour in credit as opposed to my hourly wage. so in that case, i make out a lot better.

no, i get a paycheck. say i work for the week and get paid $100 cash. on top of that, i get $20 in store credit. it doesn't take away from my earnings, just a show of appreciation from the boss. so basically it's like my check would have been $120, but every week i'm spending at least $20 on books, so technically they are free...either way it still rules.dave wrote:aren't you getting thirsty?
i still think it's whacked to get that many comics-and i guess it's true that nothing is free...you're not getting them for free-you're working for free!
