Gold Valiants Personally Received
Who here received Gold Valiants back in the day personally from VALIANT, and which one(s) did you receive from them? Also, what led to your getting it? (them)
I received one gold from VALIANT, an Eternal Warrior 1 embossed. I was talking to Mr. Steve Massarsky at a con and he gave it to me.

I got a gold Ninjak #1 via mail unexpectedly. I turned in the cards from the comics to get the set of chromium cards from Valiant. It took a while and they enclosed the gold comic as a freebie. Below is the apology letter, James Perham's business card, and an extra chromium card that came along with the gold Ninjak #1.

Here's a story I posted a few years ago about how I ended up getting a whole run of gold books, even though I didn't really want them.........

Blood of Heroes wrote:The worst day of my life happened at the San Diego Comic Con about 1994(or some time before the Chaos Effect). Valiant was in it's prime, and had a huge booth at which they held signings and all sorts of crap. The main thing they were doing was holding trivia contests every twenty minutes or so, and for each correct answer they gave you a pack of promotional trading cards. These packs were to be used as currency at an auction that was to be held on Sunday. Having a four day pass, I never strayed too far from the booth, amassing as many packs of cards as I could. They had posted a list of what was to be auctioned off. The list included rare books, original artwork, paraphernalia, etc. But what I wanted most, was to win the auction to be drawn into an upcoming comic book as some background character. I would live forever in the pages of Harbinger, or dare I say, Bloodshot! Well, the day came and I had quite a few packs of these cards. The auction number came about and I found myself in a bidding war with several other people. Then there was two- me and one other. When the smoke cleared, I found myself short about five packs of cards. I had lost. In my despair, I settled on the next auction for a complete set of Gold Books. Not too shabby, right? At least I wasn't walking away empty handed. As I started to leave the room, Gold Books in hand, I heard them announce that since the 'get drawn into a book auction' was such a big hit they were going to do another. The second one didn't come close to what the first one had gone for, but since I had spent all my 'money' on the Gold Books, I didn't have a chance. Aint life a b!tch?

I love these stories and am very jealous that you guys did all these things and had the chance.
being in the UK and about age 22ish i did zilch.
In fact i was such a lazy piece of crap i could barely get up in the morning let alone do something pro active for what i loved.
Oh how times have changed, thank fully.

I should have, but...
At the time, I had a black VW Jetta (laugh if you want, I loved that car) and had lined up some art-school help to paint the VALIANT compass on the front hood, but literally the day before I was to get it painted on, I wrecked and totalled the car due to some gravel being out in the road on a curve that caused me to spin and flip the car. I didn't get hurt (luckily) but so much for my sweet idea. No less, a few months down the line (post-Unity) I believe somebody had the same idea as me get in the books.
*sigh*

I got an X-O gold from them. It's signed by Bob Layton and Jorge Gonzalez. I got it for putting some tape across the top of my humvee when we went on a long drive from Ft Carson down to Trinidad CO. (none of us got sex changes btw).
Anyway, I was the X-O's driver, and I was one of the few in the unit who had been in the Gulf war, so to rub their loser noses in it, I taped X-O over the Executive Officer's side and Man-o-war over mine. I took some pix and told them how many people I estimated how many people I thought saw it.
Incidentally the Hummer ended up going off the road (He was driving-not me!) and it got all wrecked. I had before and after pictures now!
Jennifer Maldonado wrote me a note thanking me for the support and told me that Jorge had my photos up on his wall "for inspiration".
It was cool, and definitely worth the broken ribs...(not really, they just felt like it)

At the time I marveled at the possibility of earning a Gold Valiant. I had the idea of going into the French Quarter dressed as Shadowman during Mardi Grass and passing out flyers, but for whatever reason I didn’t do it—I even had the mask and the rest of the costume ready to go. Woulda, shoulda, coulda I guess...
It’s cool that so many of you guys earned the free one though.

If I can get one of the board masks I may at least do the Shadowman thing at Mardi Grass—this year or next. I still live near New Orleans but the problem is that I’m about 30 pounds heavier today.
Maybe the leather jacket and the wild black wig will cover a multiple number of sins. I could ask a friend to model and I take the pictures but I’d probably owe someone at least lunch.

I got a gold at a con when I was telling them about my Valiant Visions newsletter. Got it from Steve Martz. It was relatively early in the run, after the EW golds...maybe a Bloodshot gold? It was about 1994, so that seems right.
In all my dealings with Paul for the Valiant Visions, I never did get another one from them (although I did get some to give away as prizes for contests in the Valiant Visions newsletter). But at one point when I went in to get some interviews and such, Paul took me to the backstage "vault" and loaded me up with almost a lot of pre-Unity stuff, including a Harbinger 0, the Solar hard cover, and some other stuff.
