But since we still don't understand the biological basis for sexual orientation, the fact that it didn't work out doesn't really disprove anything. It was an assumption that identical twins might share the genetic cause of sexual orientation, but we still don't know what that cause is.

Incidentally, I've seen interviews with some of these sets of twins. In many cases, the one who "came out" became alienated from their families, or at least treated very differently. Whether on a conscious or sub-conscious level, that alone could be enough to keep the other twin from "coming out", even if they did have the same biological dispositions.

The science behind this is all still VERY questionable when you're only basis for determining homosexuality is by someone telling you they're gay, especially in a society where you get punished for doing that. Try doing a survey in 1940 Germany to see if there's a genetic disposition for opposing Hitler's politics.
I do hereby invoke Godwin's Law :P

I realize i'm replying on an older thread...BUT...

This is interesting because the first Harbinger book I read was the copy of Harbinger 0 that came with the "Children of the Eighth Day" trade paperback. And I found the panel where Sting saves the soda cup from falling while "fooling around" with Joe...they're lying on Joe's bed and there are clothes strewn on the ground. And I thought from that point forward that maybe Peter and Joe were a "thing" before Pete found the Harbinger foundation?

Whether he was gay or not, it doesn't matter to me. But it is an interesting thought...

Well that bothered me so much I had to look it up....

He says 'horsing around' not 'fooling around'. Some playing cards fall off the bed along with the soda. Maybe they were playing strip poker?

On the next page Pete and Joe are checking out Kris...
Joe: Guys like us can't get girls like that
Pete: Oh...yes I can.

If Pete were gay why would he want Kris so bad?
What did Joe mean by 'Guys like us'?

Later Pete was 'staring at Kris through the entire class'.

Then later Joe is yelling at Pete for being a jerk as Pete is putting his shirt back on...

Pete: You're just jealous because I have a life and a girlfriend and you feel lonely.

WTF is that supposed to mean???

I don't know. I never thought of Sting as being gay, but there seems to be a lot of mixed signals.

Right! That's what I was thinking too. When I had read the concept of Sting and his possible orientation, I went back and read those earlier books as well, and while it could be interpreted as him being gay, it still is subtle enough. Ah well...no bid deal, of course :)

Sounds to me like a teenager unsure about his sexual orientation. Personally, that's what I always thought - he was gay but felt he shouldn't be.

He could also be bisexual. Or maybe he is staring at Kris because he thinks he should (ie, normal heterosexual behavior).

He feels like he should be straight, so he wants a girlfriend, etc.

"Guy like us" I took mean nerd/losers.

And regarding Pete saying Joe would be lonely and jealous - it could be because that Pete was spending more time with Kris and Joe was losing a best friend...or it could be that Pete still is unsure about his sexuality while Joe wasn't, and Joe was hoping Pete would come out of the closet.

Any number of interpretations. That's why it is great.

Maybe Pete and Joe were like, you know, prison gay, where they couldn't get girls because of restrictions (being dorks).

All they had was each other...

Theory flawed by them not having hung sheets in front of windows and doors.

In prison you hang a sheet across the cell door when you are otherwise occupied.

That is what I have heard anyway. Not having ever been to prison (and never going back) I can only go by pop culture and media references.

Also, the whole "waist of the pants below the butt-cheeks" look was prison-advertising for 'my hole is free and ready.' I wonder how many young punks (white and black) don't know that.
