Old Fan, Renewed Collector (My Valiant Story)
I have been into reading and collecting comics since around 1989. It started off with anything X-* from Marvel, having been started off with my older sisters collection of comics from the late 70s and early 80s.
As many of you are likely aware, it became nearly impossible to keep up with Marvel in the early 90s, characters never stayed dead, there were 50 x teams running around (and somehow Wolverine managed to be on 90% of them) and gimmicks were running rampant. It was when Unity 0 came out that I first heard of Valiant, having a copy put in with my collection one week by my local shop.
What kind of gimmick is this, i thought. Giving away a free issue to start off a major event. Against my initial judgement, I decided to give them a shot, and picked up all of the unity event issues over the next few months.
I was shocked at the quality of the story and the characters, and from this moment on valiant made it into my official lineup of comics to buy.
My favorites have always been Eternal Warrior, Bloodshot, Rai, and X-O Manowar, and it is only recently that i have discovered just how good the Pre-Unity stories are for the others. For the past 6 months or so, i have been trying to put together a collection of the entire Universe, in no particular order. It has so far been great fun, rife with strange discoveries at comic shops (many of whom scoff at the idea that someone is buying old valiants).
With the announcement of VEI, and Shooter writing at Dark Horse, I can only hope that there will be many years to come of new V1 Heros relaunching, finally having fresh material and stories after 13 long years in the reject bins.
