I meet both MagnusR and John Paul at the convention saturday. Both guys were interesting people and it's a shame we didn't have more time to spend yapping about comics. As it was, MagnusR's family was waiting for him to finish up so they could go do family things and it made me feel somewhat guilty and a little bit embarassed Wink

The convention itself had a decent showing. I didn't get to fully pillage each booth as well as I'd like but them are the breaks. What I and I think MagnusR noticed was that there were alot of really nice books there. I mean things we had on our want list and wouldn't be shy dropping a few hundred dollars down to buy. BUT they were slightly higher then online nm prices and the conditions were vf-vf/nm MAYBE for the bronze stuff ( I didn't look to closely at the Silver Age stuff so maybe Ben could give you a better definition there). I was kinda dissappointed as I figured these conventions were to move books but it seems like they just wanted stupid people to over pay.

The place I spent the most amount of time was at a $1 comic book booth (had 20% off Bronze too). Some great finds there including a Magnus 13,14 21 gold and a handful of filler issues I wanted. There Bronze Age books were nice but I had them all. I think I'm slowly coming to realize that other then the biggies (giant sized x-men, x-men 94, hulk 181) that my bronze collection, in it's condition, would impress a handfull of these dealers. Mostly because what they showed me I had and in better condition at home.

Alot of Valiant items were up on the walls. They are no longer bin items. In fact one dealer at a booth had a nice selection on his wall for Greggy prices. When I commented on them he proceeded to try and sell me on the fact that Valiant was hot again. hehe. He then also told me he managed to pick these books up sortly before the convention opened up for $1 a piece. pull hair

Other things I snagged were Uncanny X-Mens 370-390 for a $1 a piece, 2 copies of Batman 457 in vf/nm nm- for $1, X-Men 267 and 268 for $10 in nm, Wolverine 10 in vf/nm for $1 and some valiant post cards. YES, post cards.

The big Valiant winner was John Paul who snagged some VERY interesting items but I'll let him talk about it on his own post. Finally, met Chuck (Mile High), James from Heritage and Mike Cargo? from New Jersey (we seem to have a common friend...COMIC KINGS! Wink )

My find today:

A 11x18" envelope. Unity: Time is not absolute Limited Edition from Valiant and Capital. Capital City Exclusive. This has a Frank Miller cover (I think) and is from 1992. Any ideas what this thing is? We didn't. Also picked up VF copies of Magnus/Predator and Solar Alpha & Omega for $12.50 each. Also got a killer poster of XO, and a XO Pink #15 for a buck. And to top it off, two sets of the Plasm card sets in the collector tins. Not bad for a beautiful day that my kids and dad spent at the zoo! It was nice meeting you guys and I hope that we'll see one another again. jp

I just read a handful of those hard to find x-men's 370-374 and I remeber why no one was buying them in 1999.

What exactly did people have and at what prices? Rai 3 & 4s or harby pinks and unity reds?

Hey Whet...was the guy you met named Mike,a dealer that was set up there??It may have been Mike DeCarl.A really nice guy,and a fair and honest dealer that I have known for atleast 10-12 years from doing shows.He sure gets around!He must have 500k miles on his van!

I got an email from Johnpaulbill,and he said he ran into another guy at the show with one of my t-shirts on,I'm assuming it was you.Thats awesome!!I appreciate you guys wearing those!If it's getting worn out,or you all want another one,just shoot me an email with your size and I'll hook you up with another design based on the Steranko cover of The Hulk Annual #1. Yeah the writing in those issues are pretty weak and added to the fact that many people dropped the hobby after the market crash around that time. Keep your eyes peeled for #376 & #377 which are the two hardest issues to find in that range. I scoured through the entire Big Apple Con and every dealer said they don't have those in stock or have rarely even seen those books.

I didn't see any variant valiants at the show. The books most sellers were trying to peddle were things like Magnus #1-12, Bloodshot 50,51, Rai #1-5, ect. Mostly pre-unity and last issues.

Yeah, must of been Mike DeCarl. He went on about you for a couple minutes. Said you were an agressive dealer, about my size although bigger boned (apparently I'm scrawny or something) and had blond hair. heheh. He was a shorter guy with darker hair and glasses. He apparently had some backstory about meeting you when he was doing mostly cards at shows. I only got half the story as I was more interested in buying comics then yapping as I only had 20mins before clossing time. He seems to like you though!

As for the shirts, I might take you up on the hulk as well. It was easy to spot other valiant fans by the shirt. I would suggest board memebers to wear them when going to conventions. It creates a brotherhood type thing and gets you a lot of interesting conversation. Many people wanted to talk about them.

I don't recall seeing either 376 or 377 but I wasn't looking to terribly hard either. All I know was that you told me to grab all the x-men between 370 and 390 and at $1 a piece it's hard to say no. Terrible stories though

Maaybe I can sell them on eBay for $50

hehehe. Or maybe I'll just keep them.

Heh well you'll most likely get cover price for 370's - 380's on ebay. But if you include 376 and 377, watch those bids fly. For some weird reason, those two books must have been severely under-ordered as alot of people I know are missing them in their collections. I went to the Big Apple Con twice this week and scoured all the dealer's X-Men books. They friggin have every single issue except those two. The copies I have are like VF/NM and I have been having a hard time trying to upgrade them to pure NM.

If you happen to have those Hulk shirt (XL) readily available, I'd love to have one. With David (Whetteon) and I having our Venom shirts on, people all thought we were from VA. It is a fantastic idea, for those of us who have similar shirts like yours to wear them out and about at conventions. Definitely makes us easier to spot. Thanks again. jp

Those shirts are a great marketing strategt, I'm suprised you haven't made a valiant one because if you did I would put it on the misc valiant items list and then everyone here would have to get one and wear them around. That's 100-400 people marketing comickings for free....of course thats also 100-400 shirts you'd have to make

I think #146 and 147 came out around... uh... late 1999 I think. ASM V2 #18-20 came out around mid-2000 (I remember that Wolverine was around #151 or so mid-2000).

It's possible that ASM V2 sales went down as a lot of people weren't accepting of the direction of the Spider-titles (I read some. They're... not really that good. It's not quite as bad as people in 2000 made it out to be, but that's only in retrospect and knowing that the bad changes went away) All I can think of re: #146 and 147 is that they came right after #145, where Wolverine got his adamantium back, and there was also that crossover thing that occured right after that.

EDIT: Oh wait, now I remember. #146 and 147 were part of that crossover that involved that 1999 ASTONISHING X-MEN mini. In AXM, Death (one of Apocalypse's Horsemen) killed off Wolverine. Then it turned out that the Wolverine killed was a Skrull impostor, and Death was actually the real Wolverine, under Apocalypse's control.

I look at it as just another form of advertising....but one of the best I've done...TV/Radio advertising here is like $1000-$1500 for some spots to run for 1 month..I can do 300-400 t-shirts for that and people wear the hell out of'em! I do want to do a Valiant shirt too.Maybe soon,and you guys will be the first to know!JP/Chris/& Whet I'll get the shirts out to ya this week sometime!

There are alot of Marvel books from 1998-2000 that are frickin hard as hell to find.I'm always rat holing those books when I see'em at shows in the .50/$1 boxes.And it ain't too often that I do find'em. Joey

I had a GREAT time at the show, I really regretted not being able to hang around a lot longer to shoot the breeze. Good to meet you JohnPaul and Whet!!!

On to the market.....

There were some really great books at the show, but only a handful on my list. I picked up All Star Western #11 in VF shape for $20, Jonah Hex 1-4, 7,8,9,92 for about $35 all in F/VF. I got a handfull of new variants that I had been watching for, but not a whole lot on the Golden/Silver/Bronze front. It wasn't that they're not there, but the ones that were there, I don't need/want. My big pick up over the weekend was talking to Terry Austin, Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers. They were gracious and friendly, I even got a Batman sketch from Marshall Rogers, and the best part? It was FREE!!! FREE!!! WOOO HOOOOO!!!! FREE!!!!!

Anyhow, all in all it was a good show, but lacked the particular books I'm after....

By the way, I've got to get a Comic Kings T-Shirt... all the cool kids are wearing them!

3X if they go that big!
