My Story

Post by genco61577 »

I first logged onto these forums in 2004 and then I got married and bought a home, so I have not checked in a few years. I just happened to be doing some podcast searching and I saw "Only the Valiant." I downloaded all of the episodes and I am going through them now. I love to here about people who loved Valiant as much as I did.

I am 32 years old. I was always obsessed with superheroes from the days of Spiderman and his Amazing Friends, ThunderCats, Transformers, GI Joe, etc. Its a great time for us since most of these are action adventurers films (some better than others though). I bought my first comic book at the local 7-11 on the newstand. I think it was Avengers 302 or something like that. I was hooked. I bought mostly Marvel for several years. My comic book money came from recycling soda and beer cans that my family collected for me. My family did not believe in weekly allowances, so I had to scrape together money for my weekly addiction.

I do not recall the first valiant I ever bought was. But I do remember seeing Solar on the shelf in the comic book store for about 1 year. I was always intrigued by the covers, but I had so many titles already I could not afford another. Plus Solar was a bit more expensive than Marvel titles. Eventually, I got hooked again into Solar and X-O. However, the Eternal Warrior is the title that really made me drop all my Marvel/Image titles and focus strictly on Valiant. I was always a history buff, and reading the stories of Gilad witness/affecting the course of human history intrigued me greatly.

During my teenage years, my father took very ill with cancer and eventually passed just shy of my 17th birthday; however, the Valiant titles helped me escape reality for a few minutes every day.To this day, one of my fondest memories is my Dad taking me to the local convention and walking around with me. Even thought he got bored and did not truly understand why I enjoyed this silly books, he still took me whenever I asked. This particular day I bought the Black Cover of Solar (I think #10), I paid $65 for it (of course I did not tell him that). But driving home that day with my Solar #10 in my hand and my Dad at the helm of his big Cadillac was one of the happiest moments of my life. As I try to complete my collection and begun to re-read this great stories again, it brings me back to a time in my life when I was just a kid and did not have the worries/sadness that the real world brings to us all.
I look forward to talking with you all and listening to more podcasts.

What an awesome personal connection to the books we all love. It makes me think back to what else was going on in my life when I first discovered these books.
