How did you become a VALIANT collector?

So my mom was cleaning out her garage yesterday...

Post by nonjon »

Well, technically it was my aunt cleaning out my mom's garage but that's too much explanation for this thread title. And she found an old long box full of bagged and boarded comics. My interest in collectibles had pretty much waned and I knew that the prices I paid way back when are still way more than they are worth now.

I told her to just throw it away. My aunt said she'd mail them to my sister (who seems to think the speculator's market of the early 90s is still around and all those old baseball cards and comics are worth as much as I used to brag about them being worth).

But then I gave in to curiosity and peered into the comics box. Sure enough, it was the vast majority of my old Valiant comics collection. Decided to grab the box and take it home. If for no other reason than re-reading all the titles I used to love.

Harbinger was my favorite back then with Archer and Armstrong a close second. I saw Harbingers 0-26 in there. A&A 0-18 or so. Most of pretty much everything else too. I decided to go ahead and see if anything of them were worth the effort to try and sell.

Turns out, I think one of them may be.

Now let's rewind my clock fifteen or so years, back when I dropped $50 for Solar #1 and #2. Or when I traded three Sega Genesis games for a Magnus #0. I was the prototypical Valiant fanboy. I wanted to win a Gold pick of the month. I wanted to help spread the Valiant word and earn one of those ultra-valuable comics that were all going for hundreds of dollars at the time.

We had a basketball court in our back yard, with a backstop stretching off one of the hoops poles. I used to practice tennis there when I was a kid. For a while we'd even had a 7' high hoop screwed into the wall for when we were too small for the big hoop. That and the dunk contests on the 7' hoop were the epitome of cool. Until the fat kid hung on for too long and bent the thing. (I don't know if that's true but it makes sense to me.)

Anyways, I decided to spread the Valiant word by painting a big Valiant logo on the backboard there. Some of my other comic collecting friends made fun of me. But I knew if it got me a gold logo comic, it'd be so worth it.

I finished the painting. I sent in the details. And to be honest, I don't remember what happened next.

I think I would've remembered if I ever made my way into the back of an issue as a Gold pic of the month.

And in searching through my entire long box, I didn't find a single gold logo issue. But I did locate a Bloodshot #0 Platinum. And I don't know how the hell I would've gotten something like that unless they mailed it to me as a thanks for my efforts.

Imagine my surprise at the stories I've been reading about this legendary Bloodshot #0 Platinum.

Thankfully, it's in better condition than you might think considering how it's been stored in a not-very climate controlled garage and probably survived a flood in my dad's basement, movement to mom's new house, and possible a few mice eating the corner of the long box.

So that's my Valiant story for now. And seeing as this is the nearest thing to an Introduction thread for these forums, anyone want to help me out here?

How would I go about selling this thing? Should I get it CGC rated? How much is that going to cost? Particularly if I'm only wanting the one comic rated. Skimming through those threads it sounds like most people send out large blocks at a time, pre-screen poor quality, etc...

Would I be better off selling it "raw"?

From the sound of it, there's a few people around here who'd be interested in buying it so I'm not ashamed to be joining here for the help and to stir up a little interest in the market for this thing. At first I was just using comicspriceguide.com and figured I might get a hundred to two hundred bucks for it, but it sounds like the last few that have sold in the thousands ($5500 and $3500 I think). Common sense tells me mine can't possibly be in as good condition as those were, but my eyes think it looks pretty good. And it's not like there's a lot of supply.

Thanks to the staff for running this great forum. Now any of you fine folks got some advice for the newbie?

Well, the Bloodshot Platinum is commonly confused with the regular edition of the book. If you could take a picture and post it on here you can see if it is truely a platinum or not and then go from there!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya, but like the others have said, it is often confused with the regular edition. Post those pics!

I've looked it up and done the research. I'm about as certain as I can be that it's a platinum. But I will get some pics going soon.

And if it's not a platinum... then why the heck didn't I get a gold logo for my 'Valiant' effort.

EDIT: The scanner's kinda dirty and the bag/board it's in isn't spotless either but I didn't want to do any tweaking in photoshop. Here's a quick scan of it:

Yep, sure likes like a Plat. No price and the logo is silver instead of white. Congrats, you might want to consider getting it graded now.

Nah. The previous fan boy money was for the memories and fun of collecting. All my old so called collectibles are gently used and abused because I read them all. Occasionally with Cheetos fingers.

This is more like stumbling across a few hundred bucks in an old pair of pants.

And yeah, I'm working on getting it graded. You can be assured, I'll be letting the people on this board know when it's up for auction.
