10 new CGC 9.8 Harbinger #1 in the past month...

Post by greg »

Between the CGC Census of 4/10/2009 and 5/14/2009, there are now:

6 new copies of Harbinger #1 in CGC 9.8 Universal (blue label)
4 new copies of Harbinger #1 in CGC 9.8 Signature Series (yellow label)

As of 4/10/2009, there were 24 in CGC 9.8 Universal, 2 in CGC 9.8 Signature.
As of 5/14/2009, there are 30 in CGC 9.8 Universal, 6 in CGC 9.8 Signature.

I would guess we'll see some of these new 10 books on the market soon.

I wonder if CGC is getting "lax" in their grading of 9.8 for this book...
that's far too many 9.8s for one month when you compare to
how tough they've been on grading Harbinger #1 in the past.

In 9 years, there were only 26 copies in CGC 9.8,
now in one month, there are 36.

That's indeed a lot of new ones. Not sure if there's enough demand to keep the price in the $1300-$1500 range if all 10 were to hit eBay at the same time. I am guessing the seller(s) will spread selling these over a period of time.

Good news for those looking to buy one.

I'm not sure what you mean by "fabricated a supply".
I just think that the CGC graders aren't being as strict
as they were in the past.

I doubt if it's a favor...
Their system is set up so that the graders don't know who the submitters are.
Only the shipping/receiving people know who sends the books in.

I think they're just not spending enough time grading.
When you grade a 9.6 quickly, you could easily conclude it's a 9.8.
If you don't know what to look for on Harbinger #1, you may not find it.
(I would bet they've hired more graders.)

They graded 20,000 books in the past month.
The month before that, it was about 12,000.

In other words, I have no doubt these are nice copies of Harbinger #1,
but I doubt that these 10 new 9.8s are "better" than the books that have
traditionally been graded 9.6... the odds are against so many 9.8s at once.

So, the question is, would you rather have a "new" 9.8, or an "old" 9.6?
...especially if the "old" 9.6 is $1,000 cheaper. :D

Around $2,500 I think. Recent ones are going for $1,300 to $1,400.

One of the new CGC 9.8 signature copies is mine. A witness submitted it at the NYCC a while back and I just got it back this past week.

I seem to remember somebody posting that they were aware of a big uber-HG submission of these books and they were expecting a bunch to come back from CGC this month. I think it was one of the Kentucky guys but I don't remember for sure.

Was there an unusual number of Harby 1 submissions this month?

I remember someone saying that recently too but can't find the thread.

Not really... 18 new copies in one month.
The prior three months there were 29, about 10 a month.

The weird part is the 10 / 18 being CGC 9.8 this time.

If CGC aren't being as strict as they were in the past then that is technically fraud as they are passing something off as something it is not.

<And you said PGX was a scam.> read as sarcasm

PGX is a scam.

PGX is still just one guy, who knows exactly whose books he's grading,
knows exactly what kind of scam he's running, and still gets people
to send him their books anyway.

All I said was that CGC is grading books too quickly lately...
but there's still three guys doing the grading, and they still
don't know whose books they're grading.

Big difference.

That's their "procedure", but I'm sure it's not always the case.

With that being said, I doubt this is favors. 10/18 being 9.8 would lead me to think grading on the book becoming more lax.

If this is what I think it is, I might know a thing or two about it but don't know if it would be gauche to say one way or the other.

Well I assume you are going to say is that ZWH got his hoard graded and that's where all the 9.8's came from :thumb:

I will neither confirm nor deny your statement, but I must admire your ability to read between the lines.

Funny I remember people on this board said there were no more 9.8's out there after that one sold for $2500.00!

I don't know if their grading has been too lax or just inconsistent lately. I sent in a 20 book modern order about 2 months ago and I had some come back as 9.6 that I thought would come back in 9.8 and some that I thought would be 9.6 come back as 9.8.

So I really don't know what the explanation could be. other than the fact that it is people grading it and they can have good or bad days I guess.

Maybe it is a Harbinger of things to come?
