Question about getting stickers off comics

I bought the Hellboy Companion some time back and when I got it, there was a yellow sticker on it that came from the printer. I peeled it off, but there's sticky residue left on it, and I've tried everything to get it off, with no success.

Does anyone know of a trick or way to remove the sticky residue from the cover?

Nail polish remover or using the sticky part of the same sticker on the residue both work well to remove the left over glue.

However I imagine nail polish remover would do even more damage to the cover and resticking the sticker on the glued area several time would likely damage the cover (certainly give stress lines).

Hope something works out.

I keep hearing naptha will remove the residue and not harm the comic.

I am not endorsing this by any means but I did a google search for archival adhesive removal and this one popped up. You may want to dig around on google if you haven't already. This appears to be the least damaging one that I saw. Just take it easy. Practice on an old Ultraverse comic and then mail it to the Only the Ultraverse guys.

Adhesives which are still tacky may sometimes simply rolled off with a soft eraser.

It depends on which Ultraverse comic.

If it's one of the later books, mail it to me and I'll send 5 extra worthless ones back for you to experiment on.

test it on another stickered comic so you get the amounts of fluid right.

Test it out on those Ultraverse issues I was talking about.....near a flame.....or some other source of ignition.

I actually have more than a few Ultraverse comics, thanks to Chiclo

, and if it wasn't for the scary list of one shots and variants it would probably be DU #2 for me. We'll see what happens in the next month or so.

Duct tape. Cover the front of the comic with duct tape, then rip it off really fast. The residue from the sticker will be of no concern anymore.

That works...I was using that for years on Star Wars action figure cardboard packs to remove the sticker stains too.

Lamp oil works incredible too. Take a tissue and the adhesive wipes off easy.

Dark Horse trade covers are glossy so it shouldn't affect the paper stock.

And using scotch tape over the adhesive stains and then ripping them off fast works too.

Is the comic plastic wrapped and the sticker is on that or is the sticker stuck to paper? Goo Gone is the best stuff for getting off stickers and sticker residue but I wouldn't use it directly on a paper cover

I started with something simple (using an eraser) and it worked! Took a while of me rubbing it for a while, but it all came off. Thanks again guys!

I use naptha regularly to remove sticker residue. It comes in a can and is available in most hardware stores. I only use it on things like book dust jackets and trade paperbacks that have a glossy surface. By glossy surface I mean the type that are on a lot of trade paperbacks where it looks like it's made of card stock covered with a layer of clear plastic. You'll sometimes see the trades where the clear plastic is starting to peel at the edges.

It's always best to do a test on a similar but worthless item until you get a feel for using naptha. I originally started using it years ago to remove "Blockbuster" stickers from vhs videotapes. One other thing about naptha is that it evaporates fairly quickly so you want to make sure to put the cap back on the can securely. The quick evaporation is great because it doesn't leave a chemical scent on the item you've used it on.
