So...
Social networking and comics...
Anybody use twitter? Is it worth the time?
My niece set me up a twitter account, so that's why I'm curious.

I use MySpace and haven't tried facebook-- although I keep getting pressured to. I do stay in touch with a number of old Valiant friends as well as fans and new friends with MySpace.
Thoughts?

Twitter is a new social networking site. It got rather big in the last couple of months. If I remember right it only allows you something like 250 characters of typed material and it limits the number of your friends to a small number. From what I understand Twitter is mostly used to keep people updated on what is going on in your life minute to minute. That is not my thing. I am personally going to pass on this on switching over to twitter anytime soon.
Now, as for facebook. I am sorry to say that myspace is dead and facebook has taken over. I can still find friends on myspace, but almost all of them also have facebook. And, the ones who have both rarely check myspace, if ever.
It is probably time to add a facebook. I am not sold on Twitter.

I would say that Twitter is an interesting social concept. MySpace was always overrated and full of junk, flashing .gifs and blaring music.VanHook wrote:So...

People with absolutely no sense of design shouldn't be allowed to plaster images all over a webpage like that!

Now, Facebook started off decent, but has been ruined in it's push to expand beyond college students. All of the games, applications, etc. are IMO, annoying and too much. It is a nice way to keep in contact with friends from long ago that you may have lost touch with.
Twitter represents a way for people who may have little or no "real world" contact to form a community. Granted, no one wants to read what you had for lunch, but it's an interesting way to keep up with what's going on in peoples lives.
Kevin Smith's tweets are generally hilarious.
I look forward to more Valiant related tweets!

I feel so out-of-touch. The last social network thing I did was friendster. I deleted my friendster account because I never logged in and updated it.
I don't plan on using twitter. To me, it seems like something to use to keep in touch with people you don't really want to keep in touch with. We already have enough ways of communicating with people - cell phone, email, IM, texting, skyping (I only found out what this is recently), . . . All these ways of communicating seemingly to avoid any face-to-face meeting. Again just my humble opinion.

I never had a myspace account because it just seemed to gimmicky and many people's pages could send you into a seizure. Facebook seems much more like what people graduate to when they are done with MS. No annoying music, gaudy wallpapers, porn stars, or add-*SQUEE*.
I don't understand the appeal of Twitter. I have an account but I think Dr. Solar and OTV are my only "followers" and the only thing I follow.
I think you should give FB a shot but two accounts are the way to go. You can have a fan page because of your status and a personal page for friends and family.

I have to agree that myspace was just an explosion of messy nonsense.
Twitter is pointless and for the needy materialistic type and facebook does what you need it to.
I do have too many facebook friends who i dont have a need to speak to ever again because i was being nice and said yes to their friend request (geez ive said no too a scary amount too though ), but in reality i couldnt give too craps whether some chick i went to school with is on holiday again, or someones opinion on the best 5 movies ( that come from a short list they provide DUH !!)
So i started a new one under comicdude Draco so i can just have some close friends and my comic book buddies ( yes that means you guys here) on there too.
So facebook wins for me.

I trade as Dead Universe Comics in the UK, which is no surprise to those who know of my legendary Dead Universe habit.

I'm on Facebook all the time now, mainly because I am addicted to Mafia Wars.
It has also gotten me in touch with a lot of people that I haven't talked to in a while. Some people seem to add everyone they even slightly know as friends, as I have had people who I probably didn't speak one word to in High School add me. I tend to only add people I was tight with.

Draco,
You can make it so you don't see updates from people you couldn't care about, but wanted to be nice enough to block.
To take it one step further, I moved "those people" into a special friends folder and then made it so only people in my "other" folders can see my personal photos ... gotta love facebook

I never did MySpace because .. well, it seemed way too complicated... and strangely dark..
Facebook is fantastic. Only add people you want. If you dont want them, simply click 'Ignore'.
There is some junk on there though. People wanting to pass crap back and forth like chainletters or something. I just click 'Ignore'
I enjoy the pointless games.. and there are a few fun applications as well.
Twitter seems way too much for me... I dont think people need to know where Im at and what Im doing. I can barely keep up with the drama in my life, I dont need to know about other peoples as well.
My vote: Facebook ... for now.

Twitter is a good thing if you have something interesting to say, but most people just post blah-blah-blahs ... Facebook has a few different levels of socializing. I'm friends with a few folks from here, a whole bunch of coworkers and former coworkers (and I use it quite a bit with them) and a bunch of former classmates (everybody just kinda keeps tabs and checks out pictures).
Mostly useful, mostly harmless. You can sync your twitter feed so it updates your facebook page.

RE: MySpace, etc.
So, just to be clear...we DON'T want Porn Stars and a Booty Call?
<Issue 2 of Oracle: The Cure comes out Wednesday>
And we DON'T want subliminal advertising ?
<Hot Sex>
(For those of you old enough to remember Kevin Nealon on SNL doing the subliminal advertising bit...)
Thanks for all the input. I'm going to mess with Twitter a bit-- gotta do it for my niece. And I set up Face Book today.

My daughter uses those sites and you are right about the viruses. She accidently clicked on an ad that installed a virus so bad that I had to reformat her hard drive and start all over. It was one of the worst viruses I've ever seen. It disabled the virus protection and firewall, plus wiped out all of the safe points on system restore. It was a nightmare to get rid of.

I have MySpace and Facebook accounts. I seldom log in to MySpace anymore and would delete my account, but I do have friends there who aren't on Facebook.
I like keeping up with friends through Facebook. But my best friend annoys the crap out of me. He uses Facebook as if it were Twitter and posts every minute meaningless detail of his daily life. I rag on him about it, but he doesn't care.
And I personally just don't get the little games and stuff. I don't care to collect virtual Easter Eggs, or Star Wars figures, or to kidnap people or join a gang or vampire club or whatever. I pretty much hate all of that crap.

It was a hard step for me to take when I accepted my first comic book on facebook. Jedi forced me to out myself to all of my friends that never knew I was a comic book geek. It was like an after school special, my friends said they had known all along and loved me anyway.

I do like the new Facebook design/feature/whatever where you can also hide updates on those specific applications. So I don't have to see an update every time somebody finds a stupid little dino egg or whatever.
